The evening air felt lighter than usual.
Nyra stepped out of the café, the small envelope still clutched tightly in her hand. For a moment, she just stood there—looking at it, feeling its weight.
Her first earning.
Not much.
But enough to mean something.
Without wasting time, she headed straight to the bank.
—
The quiet hum of machines and low voices surrounded her as she stood in line. Her fingers tightened slightly around the slip as she filled in the details.
Recipient: Riya Ashen.
A faint softness touched her expression.
Miles away.
In another country.
Living a life Nyra was fighting to protect.
When her turn came, she handed over the form and the money without hesitation.
“Transfer?” the cashier asked.
“Yes.”
Within minutes, it was done.
Just like that—
The money was gone.
But Nyra didn’t feel empty.
She felt… relieved.
Because at least one thing in her life was right.
—
On her way back, she slowed near a quiet street corner.
Her steps paused.
She opened the envelope again.
A small amount still remained.
Not much.
But something.
Nyra looked around once—then carefully took a few notes and slipped them into the hidden pocket inside her jeans.
A silent decision.
Because in her world—
You never kept everything in one place.
—
When she reached home, the familiar heaviness returned.
The door creaked open.
“I’m back,” she said softly.
Three pairs of eyes turned toward her.
Waiting.
Always waiting.
“Well?” Emma spoke first. “Did our hardworking girl get paid today?”
Nyra nodded slightly. “I got an advance.”
Before she could even move—
Sera stepped forward.
“Give it here.”
Nyra hesitated for half a second.
That was enough.
Sera snatched the envelope straight from her hand.
“How much?” she muttered, already opening it.
Daniel looked up from his seat, uninterested but listening.
Emma leaned closer, curious.
Nyra stood there.
Empty hands.
Silent.
“This is it?” Sera scoffed. “That’s all they gave you?”
“It’s just an advance,” Nyra replied quietly.
“Then next time, bring more,” Emma said lazily. “Or what’s the point?”
Nyra didn’t answer.
Sera folded the money and kept it without another word.
“Now don’t just stand there,” she snapped. “Go make dinner.”
Nyra nodded.
Of course.
—
The kitchen felt smaller tonight.
Hotter.
Heavier.
The sound of chopping, boiling, stirring filled the space as Nyra moved mechanically.
Her mind, however…
Was somewhere else.
A café.
A pair of sharp eyes.
A voice she didn’t want to remember.
“Mr. Expensive Shirt,” she muttered under her breath.
She shook her head and focused back on the food.
—
Dinner was served.
Plates placed.
Voices filled the room again.
But Nyra barely heard any of it.
Once everything was done—
She quietly slipped away.
—
Her room welcomed her with silence.
Finally.
She closed the door gently behind her and leaned against it, exhaling slowly.
Then—
Her hand moved to her jeans pocket.
The hidden money.
Still there.
Safe.
A small, almost invisible smile appeared.
Not everything was taken from her.
Not everything.
Just as she sat down—
Her phone buzzed.
Nyra froze.
Then quickly picked it up.
Riya calling…
Her expression softened instantly.
She answered.
“Hello?”
“Sis!” Riya’s cheerful voice came through, bright and warm. “Did you send the money?”
Nyra smiled faintly. “Yes. You’ll get it soon.”
“sis, you didn’t have to rush,” Riya said. “I told you I can manage for a few days.”
“I know,” Nyra replied gently. “But I didn’t want you to worry.”
There was a small pause.
“Are you okay?” Riya asked softly.
Nyra’s gaze drifted toward the door.
The house beyond it.
The voices.
The weight.
“I’m fine,” she said.
A lie.
A practiced one.
“You sound tired,” Riya murmured.
“Just a long day.”
“Did something happen?”
Nyra shook her head instinctively, even though Riya couldn’t see her. “No. Everything’s okay.”
Another pause.
Then Riya spoke again, softer this time. “sis… don’t hide things from me.”
Nyra’s chest tightened.
For a second—
She almost told her everything.
But she didn’t.
“I’m really okay,” she said quietly. “Just focus on your studies, alright?”
Riya sighed. “You always say that.”
“And you should always listen.”
A small laugh came through the call.
“Fine. But you have to take care of yourself too.”
Nyra’s smile faded into something gentler.
“I will.”
“Promise?”
“…Promise.”
They stayed on the call a little longer, talking about small things—classes, food, weather.
Normal things.
Things Nyra wished her life had more of.
Finally—
“Goodnight, sis.”
“Goodnight, Riya.”
The call ended.
—
Silence returned.
Nyra stared at her phone for a moment… then slowly placed it beside her.
Her eyes moved to the window.
Far away—
Her sister was safe.
That was enough.
That had to be enough.
Nyra lay back on the bed, one hand still resting over her pocket.
Holding onto what little she had.
Because in a world that kept taking—
She was learning how to hold on.
Even if it was just…
A few hidden pieces of hope.
Miles away—
In a city that never slowed down, never softened—
Someone else was awake.
Thinking about her.
—
The city lights stretched endlessly beyond the glass walls of Adrian Voss’s penthouse, glowing like a restless heartbeat in the dark. Silence filled the space—cold, controlled, untouched.
Just the way he preferred it.
But tonight—
His mind refused to follow.
Adrian stood near the window, a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand.
His thoughts weren’t on business.
Not on power.
Not on anything that usually mattered.
They were on her.
Nyra Ashen.
A slow, dangerous smirk touched his lips.
“Interesting,” he murmured.
He could still see her clearly—
Standing behind that café counter.
Calm.
Distant.
Pretending.
Like she didn’t know him.
Like he was nothing.
His jaw tightened slightly.
The audacity.
And yet…
That was exactly what made her impossible to ignore.
—
“She called you Mr. Expensive Shirt.”
Felix’s voice echoed faintly in his memory, laced with amusement.
A flicker of something darker passed through Adrian’s eyes.
“Careful,” Felix had added jokingly, “you look like you might actually enjoy that.”
Adrian hadn’t responded then.
Because enjoy wasn’t the word.
Not even close.
—
He set the glass down slowly.
Walked toward his desk.
Opened a drawer.
Inside—
A thin, old photograph.
Slightly worn.
Carefully kept.
Adrian picked it up.
For a brief second—
Something in his expression shifted.
A little girl.
Smiling.
Carefree.
Unaware.
Nyra.
Years ago.
His thumb brushed lightly over the edge of the photo.
“You forgot,” he said quietly.
Of course she did.
She had been too young.
Too unaware to understand the way someone had been looking at her—
Like she mattered.
Like she stayed.
—
Years passed.
She moved on.
He didn’t.
Because to him—
She was never just a moment.
She was something that stayed.
Something that grew.
Silently.
Darkly.
Unshakably.
—
“And now,” Adrian murmured, leaning back slightly, “you stand in front of me… pretending like I don’t exist.”
A faint smile appeared.
Cold.
Controlled.
Possessive.
“No, Nyra…”
His voice dropped lower.
“You don’t get to do that.”
—
He picked up his phone.
Paused.
Then dialed.
The call connected instantly.
“Yes, sir.”
“I want everything on her,” Adrian said calmly.
A short silence followed.
“Name?”
“Nyra Ashen.”
“It’ll be done.”
The line went dead.
—
Adrian stood still for a moment.
Then exhaled slowly.
This feeling—
It wasn’t new.
It had just been waiting.
And now—
It was back.
Stronger.
Sharper.
Unavoidable.
Because this time—
She wasn’t a memory.
She was real.
Close.
Within reach.
—
His eyes darkened.
“She thinks this is a coincidence,” he muttered.
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
“It’s not.”
Because Adrian Voss didn’t believe in coincidences.
Not when it came to her.
—
He picked up the photograph again.
Held it for a moment longer.
Then placed it back with care.
Like something that belonged to him.
—
“This time,” he whispered,
“I’m not watching from a distance.”
A pause.
Then softer—
“You walked into my world again, Nyra…”
His lips curved slowly, dangerously.
“Now let’s see how long it takes before you realize…”
A flicker of obsession passed through his gaze.
“…you were never out of it.”
