CH - 11 " LET HER BELIEVE "

The café was already alive when Nyra stepped in.

The familiar noise wrapped around her—cups clinking, machines humming, low conversations blending into something almost comforting.

Almost.

She tied her apron quickly, her eyes scanning the space until they landed on him.

Alen.

He noticed her almost immediately and raised an eyebrow. “You look… suspiciously less tired today.”

Nyra rolled her eyes faintly as she walked over. “Good morning to you too.”

He smirked. “Morning.”

There was a brief pause before Nyra spoke again, this time more softly.

“Thank you.”

Alen blinked. “For what?”

“The library,” she said. “I went there.”

His expression shifted into curiosity. “And?”

“I got the job.”

A grin spread across his face. “That was fast.”

“You told me not to waste time,” she replied calmly.

He chuckled. “Fair enough. So now you’re working two jobs?”

“Yes.”

“That’s insane.”

Nyra picked up a tray, her voice steady. “It’s necessary.”

Alen watched her for a second, something unreadable passing through his eyes.

Then, as if deciding to lighten the mood, he leaned closer slightly.

“So…” he said in a playful tone, “what about that guy?”

Nyra paused mid-step. “What guy?”

“You know,” he smirked, “Mr. Expensive Shirt.”

Nyra exhaled softly, already slightly annoyed.

“Why did you even call him that?” Alen added, clearly entertained.

She shook her head faintly, placing cups onto a tray before answering.

“It just… happened.”

“That’s not an answer,” he teased.

Nyra gave him a look.

But he waited.

So she spoke.

“The first time I saw him,” she began, her tone casual but edged with irritation, “I was out looking for a job.”

Alen leaned against the counter, listening.

“I accidentally bumped into him,” she continued. “And instead of acting like a normal person, he behaved like I had committed some kind of crime.”

“Rude?” Alen asked.

“Very.”

She picked up another cup, placing it down a little harder than necessary.

“Then later, on my first day here… he showed up.”

Alen raised a brow. “Coincidence?”

“That’s what I thought,” Nyra replied.

“But?”

“But he paid more than the actual amount.”

Alen let out a small laugh. “Seriously?”

“Yes,” she said flatly. “And when I tried to return it, he acted like it didn’t matter.”

“Rich people behavior,” Alen muttered.

Nyra nodded slightly. “We argued.”

“Of course you did,” he grinned.

She ignored that.

“And then,” she added, “the next day he came again.”

Alen’s smirk widened. “Ah… now this is getting interesting.”

“Not really,” Nyra said, unimpressed. “It felt intentional.”

“Intentional?” he repeated.

“Like he just wanted to show off,” she said, her voice cooling. “Money. Attitude. Whatever people like him think is impressive.”

Alen laughed under his breath. “So he came back just to flex?”

“Probably,” Nyra shrugged lightly. “And then he disappeared.”

“That’s disappointing,” he said dramatically.

Nyra gave him a look. “Not really.”

Alen tilted his head. “No?”

She shook her head once. “Maybe he found someone else to show off to.”

Her tone was dismissive.

Final.

Like the matter didn’t exist anymore.

But something about the way she placed the tray down—just a little too controlled—said otherwise.

Alen noticed.

But he didn’t push.

“Still,” he said lightly, “Mr. Expensive Shirt is a great name.”

Nyra almost smiled.

Almost.

“Focus on your work,” she said instead.

“Yes, ma’am.”

_

Nyra moved away, immersing herself in the rhythm of the café again.

Orders. Steps. Movements.

Control.

Everything predictable.

Everything safe.

At least… that’s what she believed.

Because far from her understanding—

Nothing about it was coincidence.

Not the first meeting.

Not the café.

Not even her words.

_

Elsewhere

Adrian Voss sat still in his office chair, but his mind was far from it—locked onto one thought, one girl, one presence he couldn’t ignore.

Silent.

Controlled.

Owned.

His fingers tapped once against the surface beside him.

“She thinks I was showing off,” he said calmly.

No anger.

No reaction.

Just… observation.

Behind him, a man remained still. “Should we correct that misunderstanding, sir?”

A faint smile appeared on Adrian’s lips.

Cold.

Measured.

“No.”

His gaze darkened slightly.

“Let her believe what she wants.”

Because illusions…

Were far more useful than truth.

He turned away from the window, his voice lowering just enough to carry weight.

“Continue watching.”

A pause.

“And make sure she doesn’t get hurt.”

The order was simple.

But the tone behind it—

Possessive.

Unspoken.

Dangerous.

Back in the café—

Nyra suddenly felt it again.

That strange, creeping awareness.

Like something unseen had just brushed past her reality.

She glanced toward the entrance.

Nothing.

No one.

Still—

Her grip tightened slightly around the tray.

A thought crossed her mind, uninvited.

Why do I feel like this isn’t over?

Because it wasn’t.

Not even close.

_

By the time Nyra finished her shift at the café, her body ached—but she didn’t let it show.

She untied her apron, folding it neatly before placing it aside.

“I’m leaving,” she said, glancing at Alen.

He looked up from the counter. “Already? Double-shift girl doesn’t rest, huh?”

Nyra ignored the tease. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Hey—” he called lightly, “don’t collapse on the way.”

She paused for a second, then replied without turning, “I won’t.”

A small, almost invisible smile touched his lips.

“Good bye, Nyra.”

“…Good bye, Alen.”

And just like that, she walked out—toward her second life.

_

The library welcomed her with the same quiet stillness.

Nyra stepped inside and closed the door gently behind her.

“Good evening,” she said.

Michael looked up from the counter. “You’re on time.”

“I said I would be.”

He gave a small nod. “Start with the shelves on the left. Some books are out of place.”

“Alright.”

No unnecessary conversation. No delay.

Nyra moved toward the shelves, her fingers brushing lightly against the spines as she began arranging them—precise, careful, controlled.

Minutes passed.

Silence settled.

Only the soft sound of shifting books filled the space.

Then—

“Nyra.”

Michael’s voice.

She paused. “Yes?”

“Come here.”

Something in his tone made her steps slower than usual.

She walked toward the counter—

And stopped.

Her breath hitched for a fraction of a second.

Him.

" Mr . expensive shirt "

Standing there like he belonged in every space he entered.

And beside him—

Another man.

Sharp eyes, relaxed posture, and a grin that felt entirely too amused.

Felix.

He noticed her reaction immediately.

“Oh?” he said, lifting a hand in an exaggerated wave. “Well, well… look who we have here.”

Nyra didn’t react.

Her expression settled into calm.

Controlled.

Unreadable.

She looked at Michael instead. “You called me?”

Michael gestured toward Adrian. “Mr. Voss is looking for a book. You’ll help him find it.”

A beat.

Nyra finally looked at Adrian.

His gaze was already on her.

Steady.

Unmoving.

Like he had been expecting this moment.

“Which book?” she asked.

“Psychology section,” Michael replied. “Mind control.”

Something about those words made the air shift.

Nyra turned slightly. “Come with me.”

She didn’t wait for an answer.

She walked.

And he followed.

Felix leaned casually against the counter, watching them go with a slow grin.

“This,” he murmured, “is going to be fun.”

_

The shelves stood tall, shadows stretching between them.

Nyra scanned the titles, her fingers moving with practiced ease.

“There,” she said quietly.

The book was placed high.

Too high.

She frowned slightly.

Why did I put this one up there…?

She stepped closer, lifting her hand—

Her fingers barely brushed the edge.

Not enough.

She shifted on her toes, reaching higher—

Still not enough.

A small breath of frustration escaped her.

Then—

She froze.

A presence.

Close.

Too close.

Behind her.

The air changed.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Adrian.

She didn’t turn.

Didn’t move.

But she felt him.

Every inch of him.

His arm moved past her—slow, deliberate.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

His hand reached above hers, effortlessly grabbing the book.

But he didn’t move away.

Not immediately.

His other hand came to rest lightly against the shelf—trapping her between the wood and him without touching her directly.

A cage without contact.

A control without force.

Nyra’s heartbeat quickened.

She hated it.

The way her body reacted.

The way her breath felt… stolen.

“Still struggling with heights?” his voice came low, near her ear.

Calm.

Almost amused.

Nyra clenched her jaw.

“I didn’t ask for help.”

He handed her the book—but his fingers lingered for half a second longer than necessary.

Intentional.

Everything about him was intentional.

“You don’t need to,” he replied quietly. “You make it obvious.”

Nyra turned sharply, putting distance between them.

“I manage just fine.”

His eyes followed her movement.

“Do you?” he asked.

The question wasn’t simple.

It wasn’t about the book.

Nyra’s gaze hardened. “Take what you came for and leave.”

Felix’s laughter echoed faintly from the other side of the library.

“Wow,” he called out, “she talks back. I like her.”

“Shut up, Felix,” Adrian said without looking away from Nyra.

Felix only grinned wider.

Nyra crossed her arms. “Is there anything else, or are you done showing off again?”

A flicker of something dark passed through Adrian’s eyes.

“Showing off?” he repeated softly.

“Yes,” she said, unbothered. “Money. Attitude. Presence. Whatever this is.”

Silence.

Then—

A slow step forward.

Nyra didn’t move.

But her pulse betrayed her.

“If I wanted to show off,” Adrian said quietly, “you wouldn’t be standing this comfortably.”

The words were soft.

But they carried weight.

Danger.

Nyra held his gaze, refusing to step back.

“Then don’t.”

A pause.

Then Adrian took the book from her hand.

“Careful, Nyra Ashen,” he said.

Her name.

On his lips.

Again.

“You’re making assumptions about things you don’t understand.”

She didn’t reply.

Wouldn’t.

Felix clapped slowly from afar. “Alright, this tension is getting personal. Should I leave you two alone or—?”

“We’re leaving,” Adrian said.

He turned without another word.

Felix gave Nyra a playful wink before following him. “See you around, Ms. Composed.”

The door shut behind them.

But the air they left behind—

Didn’t return to normal.

Evening came quietly.

Nyra finished her work without mistakes.

Michael handed her an envelope.

“Your advance,” he said.

She looked at it, surprised. “Already?”

“You work well.”

That was enough.

“Thank you.”

_

The bank was nearly empty.

Nyra deposited the money without hesitation.

Safe.

Untouchable.

At least there.

_

Home wasn’t the same.

It never was.

The moment she stepped inside—

“Where’s the money?”

Daniel.

Straight to the point.

Nyra placed her bag down slowly. “The café owner is out of town. He’ll give the salary when he returns.”

A lie.

Clean.

Necessary.

Sera scoffed. “Convenient.”

Emma crossed her arms, her tone dripping with mockery. “So now we just wait for your excuses?”

Nyra didn’t react.

Didn’t argue.

“I’ll make dinner,” she said quietly.

“Of course you will,” Daniel muttered. “At least be useful.”

The kitchen swallowed her whole.

Cooking. Cleaning. Serving.

Silence wrapped around her like a habit.

Not peace.

Just absence.

_

Later—

The house grew quiet.

Nyra finally stepped into the bathroom, letting the water wash over her.

But it didn’t wash away the day.

Nothing ever did.

Her reflection stared back at her—tired, distant.

Controlled.

Always controlled.

Night.

Her room.

Her space.

The only place where she allowed herself to break… just a little.

Nyra sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers gripping the small bottle in her hand.

Medicine.

Without it—

Sleep didn’t come.

Memories did.

She swallowed the pill quickly.

But her chest tightened anyway.

A sudden rush of breath.

Her heart racing.

Too fast.

Too loud.

Voices from the past echoing where they didn’t belong.

Her hands trembled.

“No…” she whispered.

A panic attack.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

She closed her eyes, forcing herself to breathe.

Slow.

Controlled.

Like she always did.

Like she had learned to.

Minutes passed before it settled.

Before she settled.

Nyra lay down, exhaustion finally pulling her under.

But even in sleep—

Her mind didn’t rest.

Because somewhere in the darkness—

She wasn’t alone.

And she never had been.
