Nyra woke up with a sharp inhale, her chest rising too fast, as if she had been running in her dreams.
Except… she hadn’t been dreaming at all.
Her room was quiet. Too quiet.
The pale morning light slipped through the thin curtains, landing softly on her face. Her eyes burned—heavy, dry, and restless. The clock on the wall read 8:17 AM.
Her heart dropped.
“I’m late…”
She sat up immediately, her fingers trembling slightly as she pushed her messy hair back. The empty strip of sleeping pills on her bedside table stared at her like an accusation.
She had taken one last night.
Still… it hadn’t been enough.
Nyra quickly got out of bed, her movements rushed but practiced. She washed her face, tied her hair into a loose ponytail, and changed into her worn-out clothes.
Her reflection in the mirror looked… tired.
Not just tired—drained.
“Pull yourself together,” she muttered under her breath.
And then she stepped out of her room.
—
The moment Nyra reached downstairs, the air shifted.
Cold.
Judging.
Unforgiving.
Her uncle, Daniel, sat at the dining table, scrolling through his phone. Sera stood near the kitchen counter, arms crossed. Emma leaned against the wall, sipping juice like she had nothing better to do.
All three pairs of eyes turned to her.
Late.
“Finally decided to wake up?” Sera’s voice was sharp, cutting through the silence.
Nyra lowered her gaze. “I’m sorry, I—”
“Sorry?” Emma scoffed. “Can we eat ‘sorry’ for breakfast?”
Daniel slammed his phone on the table. “What’s the point of keeping you here if you can’t even do basic things on time?”
Nyra swallowed, her fingers tightening slightly. “I’ll make breakfast right now.”
“You should have already made it,” Sera snapped. “Do you think this is a hotel?”
“No, aunty…”
“Then act like it.”
Nyra moved quickly into the kitchen, ignoring the way her chest tightened. She started preparing breakfast—eggs, toast, tea—her hands moving automatically despite the noise around her.
Emma walked past her, whispering just loud enough—
“Useless.”
Nyra didn’t respond.
She never did.
—
After serving them and cleaning everything, Nyra quietly went back to her room.
The house never felt like home.
It felt like… a place she had to survive.
She changed into her café uniform—a simple shirt and jeans. Before leaving, her eyes fell on the pill strip again.
Her lips parted slightly.
Tonight… she would need another one.
Without it… sleep wouldn’t come.
And without sleep…
She shook her head, pushing the thought away.
“Just get through the day.”
—
The streets of Italy were alive as always—busy, loud, full of people who had somewhere to belong.
Nyra walked past them all, unnoticed.
Invisible.
She reached the café and pushed the door open.
The soft bell chimed.
“Hey, Nyra!” Alen greeted her from behind the counter, smiling.
She gave a small nod. “Good morning, Alen.”
“You’re late today.”
“I know… sorry.”
He shrugged lightly. “Relax. Josh isn’t here yet. You’re safe.”
A faint, almost invisible smile touched her lips.
“Thanks.”
They both got to work.
Orders came in. Coffee machines hummed. Conversations blurred into background noise. Nyra worked quietly, efficiently, barely speaking unless necessary.
But her mind…
Her mind wasn’t there.
It kept drifting.
To him.
Mr. Expensive Shirt.
Her grip on the cup tightened slightly.
Yesterday… the way he had looked at her.
That gaze.
Heavy. Intense. Unreadable.
“Why am I even thinking about him?” she whispered to herself, annoyed.
“Thinking about who?” Alen suddenly appeared beside her.
She startled slightly. “No one.”
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t push.
Still…
Nyra couldn’t shake the feeling.
Like something had shifted.
—
After her shift ended, Nyra grabbed her bag.
“See you tomorrow,” Alen said.
“Yeah… bye.”
She stepped out and headed straight toward the library.
Her second job.
Her second escape.
—
The library was quiet, calm… safe.
“Good afternoon,” she said softly as she entered.
Micheal The librarian, looked up. “Ah, Nyra. Right on time.”
She nodded. “Yes.”
“Same tasks today.”
“Okay.”
She moved between the shelves, organizing books, scanning returns, keeping everything in place.
This place didn’t judge her.
It didn’t yell.
It didn’t insult.
It just… existed.
But even here—
Her thoughts betrayed her.
Mr. Expensive Shirt.
That moment.
That tension.
The way her heart had reacted for no reason.
“Stop it,” she muttered under her breath, placing a book back.
“Why are you even thinking about him?”
She shook her head, trying to focus.
That’s when her phone buzzed.
She checked it.
Message from Josh: Salary sent.
Her breath slowed.
Salary.
For a brief second, relief touched her face.
But then—
Daniel’s voice echoed in her head.
"Half your salary comes to this house. Don’t forget."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
Of course.
It was never really hers.
—
After finishing her shift, Nyra stepped out of the library and walked toward the bank.
The evening sky had turned darker, shadows stretching across the streets.
And that feeling returned.
Again.
Like someone was watching her.
She slowed down slightly.
Looked around.
Nothing.
People walked past. Cars moved. Everything seemed normal.
Still…
Her heart beat faster.
“…It’s just in your head,” she whispered.
But it didn’t feel like it.
—
Across the street, hidden in the shadows—
A black car stood still.
Inside it, Adrian Voss watched her.
Silently.
His gaze followed every step she took.
Every movement.
Every breath.
“She noticed,” Felix said from the driver’s seat, glancing at him.
Adrian didn’t respond immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on Nyra.
“She always does,” he said finally, his voice low, controlled.
Felix exhaled. “You’ve been watching her for days now.”
Silence.
Adrian’s fingers tapped lightly against his armrest.
“She walks alone at night,” he said.
Felix frowned. “So?”
Adrian’s gaze darkened slightly.
“So… I make sure nothing happens.”
Felix turned to him, studying his expression.
“You don’t ‘just make sure’ things, Adrian.”
No response.
Because even Adrian knew—
This wasn’t just observation anymore.
This was something else.
Something… dangerous.
—
Nyra reached the bank, still unaware.
Unaware of the eyes that never left her.
Unaware of the shadow that followed her steps.
Unaware…
That someone had already stepped into her life—
Without her permission.
And he wasn’t planning to leave.
_
The Voss estate stood like a monument—cold, elegant, untouchable.
Adrian Voss stepped out of his car without a word, his presence alone enough to silence the guards at the entrance. The heavy doors opened before he even reached them.
Inside, the air was warm.
But not comforting.
Never comforting.
—
“Look who finally decided to visit us.”
Sebastian’s voice echoed across the dining hall before Adrian even sat down.
Adrian didn’t react. He pulled out his chair calmly, his movements precise, controlled.
“Busy running your empire?” Sebastian continued, leaning back in his chair with a smirk. “Or just avoiding human interaction as usual?”
Victor, Adrian’s father, didn’t look up from his plate. “Enough, Sebastian.”
But Sebastian only grinned wider. “What? I’m just trying to talk to my nephew. Though talking to him feels like talking to a wall.”
Adrian finally spoke, his tone flat. “Then stop trying.”
A small chuckle escaped Alex.
“Same old Adrian,” Alex muttered.
Elena placed a dish on the table and gently looked at Adrian. “You should eat first.”
Adrian nodded slightly. “Thank you… Mom.”
The word slipped out naturally.
Elena’s expression softened. “You’ve been working too much again.”
Sebastian scoffed. “Working? This guy lives in spreadsheets and silence.”
Adrian took a bite of his food, completely unbothered.
“Better than living in noise without purpose,” he replied calmly.
Alex let out a quiet damn under his breath.
Sebastian pointed at him. “See? This is what I’m talking about. Cold. Sharp. No emotion. One day, you’ll scare even your own shadow away.”
Adrian’s eyes lifted slowly.
“My shadow knows its place.”
For a second, silence fell over the table.
Then Sebastian laughed.
“God, you’re impossible.”
—
Victor finally spoke, his tone serious now. “The Milan deal. What’s the update?”
Adrian placed his fork down. Business.
That, he did well.
“It’s done,” Adrian said. “They agreed to our terms. Forty percent stake, full operational control within six months.”
Alex straightened slightly. “That fast?”
“They didn’t have a choice.”
Sebastian smirked. “Or you didn’t give them one?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Victor nodded slowly. “And the underground channels?”
“Stable,” Adrian replied. “No disruptions. Shipments are running on time.”
Elena glanced at him briefly, but didn’t say anything.
She never asked about that side of his life.
And Adrian never explained.
Sebastian leaned forward slightly. “Heard there was some movement in Naples.”
“There was,” Adrian said. “Handled.”
“How?”
Adrian picked up his glass, taking a slow sip.
“They won’t move again.”
Sebastian raised both hands. “Alright, alright. Message received.”
Alex shook his head. “You really don’t leave anything unfinished, do you?”
Adrian’s gaze darkened slightly.
“No.”
—
Dinner ended in a familiar silence.
No warmth.
No connection.
Just presence.
Adrian stood up first.
“I’ll be in my room.”
“Of course you will,” Sebastian muttered.
But there was no real bite in it.
—
Adrian’s room was exactly what one would expect.
Minimal.
Dark.
Controlled.
He didn’t turn on the lights.
He never did.
Instead, he walked toward the table and lit a single candle.
The flame flickered.
Small.
Fragile.
Alive.
His eyes fixed on it.
And for the first time that night—
Something shifted.
His fingers brushed lightly against the table as he leaned closer, the faint glow reflecting in his dark eyes.
“…Little flame.”
The words were barely above a whisper.
Nyra.
Her tired eyes.
Her quiet voice.
The way she kept going… even when everything around her tried to break her.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“She walks alone,” he murmured, almost to himself.
The memory replayed—
Her looking around.
Sensing something.
Not fear.
Awareness.
“She notices.”
A slow breath escaped him.
“Good.”
Because weak people didn’t survive.
And she…
She wasn’t weak.
—
Adrian sat down, the candlelight casting shadows across his face.
He didn’t look like a man.
He looked like something carved out of darkness.
“You shouldn’t be alone,” he said quietly, as if she were standing right in front of him.
“You don’t even realize what kind of world you’re walking through.”
His fingers curled slightly.
Dangerous thoughts.
Careful.
Controlled.
But still… there.
Felix’s voice echoed in his mind—
“You don’t ‘just make sure’ things, Adrian.”
Adrian’s gaze hardened.
“No,” he said softly.
He didn’t.
Because this wasn’t just about safety anymore.
This was interest.
Attention.
Something… pulling.
—
The candle flickered again.
And Adrian watched it like it was the only thing keeping the darkness in place.
“My little flame…”
A pause.
Long.
Heavy.
“You burn quietly.”
His voice dropped lower.
“But even the smallest flame…”
His eyes darkened completely.
“…can start a fire.”
—
Outside, the night deepened.
Unaware.
Unprepared.
And somewhere in the same city—
Nyra Ashen breathed under the same sky.
Still unaware…
That someone had already memorized the way her world worked.
And he wasn’t just watching anymore.
He was… waiting.
