Morning arrived without gentleness.
It did not ease her into the day, nor did it give her time to gather herself properly, because the moment Nyra opened her eyes, the reality of everything waiting ahead settled over her like something heavy and unavoidable.
Her first day.
At Voss Empire.
In his world.
She sat up slowly, her fingers brushing against her phone as she stared at the notification again, as if reading it one more time would somehow prepare her for what was coming.
It didn’t.
Nothing could.
Still—
She stood up.
Because she had no choice.
—
The house was already awake.
Voices.
Movement.
Judgment waiting without even needing a reason.
The moment Nyra stepped out of her room, Daniel’s eyes were on her.
“So, you actually got selected,” he said, his tone holding more suspicion than approval.
Sera crossed her arms. “Let’s see how long you last there.”
Emma smirked. “Don’t get thrown out on the first day.”
Nyra didn’t respond.
She adjusted her bag slightly and walked past them, her silence not weakness—but control.
Because she knew—
Words would not change anything here.
—
The Voss Empire building looked the same as yesterday.
Tall.
Cold.
Unreachable.
But today—
She wasn’t here as an outsider.
She was here as someone who had earned her place.
Even if no one else believed it yet.
—
The moment she stepped inside, the atmosphere felt different.
Eyes turned.
Subtle.
Quick.
Judging.
Whispers followed quietly behind her, not loud enough to be called out, but clear enough to be felt.
“She’s the new one?”
“She doesn’t look like it…”
“How did she even get in?”
Nyra kept walking.
Her steps steady.
Her expression calm.
Even when her chest tightened slightly.
—
At the reception, a different woman sat today, her posture professional, her expression neutral.
“Name?” she asked.
“Nyra.”
The woman checked her system and nodded. “You’ve been assigned to the executive floor. Take the elevator on the right.”
Executive floor.
Nyra’s fingers tightened slightly.
That meant—
Him.
—
The elevator ride felt longer than it was.
Each passing floor making her more aware of where she was going.
Where she had chosen to step.
—
When the doors opened, the atmosphere changed again.
Quieter.
Sharper.
Controlled.
People moved with purpose, their conversations low, their eyes focused—yet some of those eyes still found her, scanning her in the same way as before.
Measuring.
Judging.
—
A woman approached her, dressed impeccably, her expression composed but not entirely welcoming.
“You’re the new hire,” she said.
“Yes.”
“I’m Clara, senior coordinator,” she introduced herself. “Follow me.”
Nyra nodded and walked beside her.
“You’ll be assisting on multiple tasks for now,” Clara continued. “Reports, documentation, scheduling—basic things.”
“I understand.”
Clara glanced at her briefly. “Let’s see how long that understanding lasts.”
The words were subtle.
But intentional.
—
Inside a glass-partitioned workspace, Nyra was handed her first set of files.
“Sort these,” Clara said. “Categorize, highlight discrepancies, and prepare a summary.”
Nyra nodded.
Without question.
Without hesitation.
—
Hours passed.
She worked quietly.
Efficiently.
Carefully.
Ignoring the occasional glances.
The whispers.
The subtle comments.
“She’s trying too hard.”
“Let’s see when she messes up.”
Nyra didn’t react.
Her focus remained on the files.
Because this—
This was something she could control.
—
Inside his office—
Adrian stood near the glass window, his gaze not on the city—
But on her.
From where he stood, he could see everything.
The way she worked.
The way she didn’t respond.
The way she endured.
Felix leaned against the desk, watching him instead.
“You’ve been staring for ten minutes,” he pointed out casually.
“I’m observing,” Adrian replied.
Felix smirked slightly. “Yeah… sure you are.”
Adrian didn’t respond.
His gaze didn’t move.
Because she hadn’t stopped.
Not once.
—
“Send her in,” Adrian said suddenly.
Felix straightened slightly. “Already?”
Adrian’s eyes remained fixed.
“She’s done enough waiting.”
—
Nyra’s name was called.
Her fingers paused for the briefest second before she stood up, adjusting her bag slightly as she walked toward the office.
Every step felt heavier.
Because she knew—
Who was inside.
—
She knocked.
“Come in.”
Nyra stepped inside.
The air felt different.
Darker.
Controlled.
Adrian sat behind his desk, his presence filling the room without effort, his eyes already on her as if he had been expecting this moment.
“Sit.”
She did.
—
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Intentional.
—
“You completed the files,” he said.
“Yes.”
“Quickly.”
“I didn’t waste time.”
A pause.
His gaze sharpened slightly.
“Confidence?”
“Efficiency.”
—
Felix watched from the side, clearly entertained.
—
“Let’s test that,” Adrian said.
He pushed another file toward her.
“This one is more complex. Errors are not obvious.”
Nyra picked it up.
Her fingers steady.
“I’ll find them.”
A faint shift in Adrian’s expression.
Not quite approval.
But not dismissal either.
—
“You don’t ask questions,” he noted.
“I understand instructions.”
“And if you don’t?”
“I figure it out.”
—
Their eyes locked.
Tension building quietly.
—
“Or you fail,” Adrian added.
Nyra didn’t look away.
“I don’t.”
—
Silence.
Thicker than before.
—
Felix let out a low whistle. “This is going to be fun.”
Adrian ignored him.
His gaze still on her.
“You’ll work directly under this department,” he said finally. “No mistakes.”
“I won’t give you one.”
—
A slight smirk appeared on Felix’s face.
Bold.
—
Adrian leaned back slightly.
“We’ll see.”
—
Nyra stood up.
“Anything else?”
A pause.
Then—
“No.”
She nodded once.
And walked out.
—
The moment she stepped back into the workspace, the eyes returned.
Sharper now.
More aware.
“She went into his office already?”
“On the first day?”
“Who does she think she is?”
Clara’s expression tightened slightly.
“Back to work,” she said coldly.
Nyra sat down.
Picked up the file.
And continued.
As if nothing had changed.
—
Inside the office—
Felix shook his head slowly.
“You’re pushing her.”
Adrian’s gaze remained on the glass wall.
“She doesn’t break.”
Felix crossed his arms. “And if she does?”
A brief pause.
Then—
“She won’t.”
—
Because something about her—
Was different.
And Adrian Voss—
Had already decided—
He was going to find out exactly how far that difference went.
