CH - 27 " WHERE SILENCE BREATH "

Sleep refused to come—not in the soft, fleeting way it sometimes avoids a restless mind, but in a stubborn, unrelenting way that left Nyra lying awake long after midnight had claimed the world, her eyes fixed on the ceiling while her thoughts refused to quiet, circling endlessly around everything she had endured, everything she had swallowed in silence, everything she had forced herself to survive without breaking.

She turned slightly on the bed, the fabric of the sheets shifting beneath her as she exhaled slowly, trying to steady the weight pressing against her chest, but it didn’t ease—not really—because the exhaustion in her body was no longer something sleep could fix, it was something deeper, something carved into her routine, into her existence.

Her eyes flickered toward her phone.

2:43 AM.

A hollow breath escaped her lips.

She couldn’t stay here.

Not tonight.

Slowly, she pushed herself up, her movements careful, quiet, as if even the smallest sound might disturb the fragile stillness of the house, her feet touching the cold floor as she stood, grounding herself just enough to move forward.

She walked toward the door and paused for a brief second, her hand resting on the handle, her fingers tightening slightly before she turned it, opening the door with practiced silence, stepping out into the dim hallway.

The house was quiet.

Unusually quiet.

She moved down the stairs, each step light, controlled, her senses alert out of habit rather than fear, until she reached the main gate, her breath catching faintly as she unlocked it, the soft click echoing louder than it should have in the stillness of the night.

For a moment—

She hesitated.

Then stepped out.

The night air wrapped around her instantly, cool and gentle, brushing against her skin like something alive, something freeing, something that loosened the tightness in her chest just enough for her to breathe properly again.

And without thinking—

She began to walk.

Meanwhile—

Adrian entered the mansion with a presence that shifted the air itself, his footsteps steady yet carrying a tension that had been building throughout the evening, something sharp beneath the surface, something unsettled.

Victor sat in the living room, a glass of coffee resting in his hand, his posture relaxed yet observant, his eyes lifting the moment Adrian walked in.

“I didn’t expect you tonight,” Victor said calmly.

Adrian didn’t respond to that.

Instead—

“What were you doing in my office today?”

The question came cold.

Direct.

Carrying something far heavier than curiosity.

Victor’s brow lifted slightly, though his expression remained composed.

“I was handling business,” he replied. “Or has that become a problem now?”

Adrian stepped closer, his gaze sharpening.

“That’s not what I asked.”

A brief silence stretched between them.

Victor placed his cup down slowly, his attention fully on his son now.

“Then ask properly,” he said.

Adrian’s jaw tightened, his voice lowering.

“Stay away from her.”

The words landed hard.

Unfiltered.

Possessive.

Victor didn’t react immediately.

Instead, he studied Adrian carefully, as if weighing not just the words, but everything behind them.

“Her?” he repeated, calm but deliberate.

Adrian’s gaze darkened.

“You know exactly who I’m talking about.”

Victor leaned back slightly, his expression shifting into something thoughtful.

“Nyra,” he said quietly.

The silence that followed was heavier than before, thick with tension, with something unspoken but undeniable.

“And why,” Victor continued, his tone steady, “should I stay away from her?”

Adrian’s control tightened visibly, his voice dropping further.

“Because she’s not part of your concern.”

Victor’s lips curved faintly, though there was no amusement in his eyes.

“That’s interesting,” he said slowly. “Because from what I saw… she’s very much part of your concern.”

Adrian’s gaze hardened instantly.

“This isn’t a discussion.”

“No,” Victor replied calmly, “this is exactly a discussion.”

Adrian stepped closer now, his presence sharper, more dangerous, the restraint in his posture barely holding.

“I said stay away from her.”

Victor met his gaze without flinching.

“And I’m asking why.”

A pause.

Tense.

Heavy.

“Because I don’t like it,” Adrian said finally, his voice low, controlled—but the edge in it unmistakable.

Victor’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You don’t like… what?” he asked. “The fact that I spoke to her? Or the fact that she responded to me without fear?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

“You’re pushing her too far,” Victor continued, his tone firmer now. “I saw it. Everyone saw it. The workload, the pressure, the way you keep testing her like she’s something to break.”

“She won’t break,” Adrian cut in immediately.

Victor held his gaze.

“And if she does?”

A beat of silence.

“She won’t,” Adrian repeated, colder this time.

Victor shook his head slightly.

“You’re not testing her strength anymore,” he said. “You’re testing her limits.”

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“She needs to learn.”

Victor’s expression hardened just slightly.

“And you think this is the way to do it?”

Another silence.

Then—

Victor leaned forward slightly, his voice quieter but sharper.

“Or is this about something else?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You didn’t like that I spoke to her,” Victor said, watching him closely. “You didn’t like that she listened to me. You didn’t like the way she stood there… not breaking under your pressure, but softening under someone else’s.”

Adrian’s expression darkened instantly.

“Watch your words.”

Victor didn’t stop.

“That wasn’t control I saw in you today,” he continued. “That was jealousy.”

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Adrian’s eyes hardened, something colder settling beneath them.

“I don’t get jealous.”

Victor let out a quiet breath.

“No,” he said. “You just don’t like losing control.”

That—

Struck deeper than Adrian allowed himself to show.

“And what happens,” Victor added, his voice calm but cutting, “when she stops responding to your control completely?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because for the first time—

That thought wasn’t something he could dismiss easily.

Without another word, he turned sharply and walked away, his steps controlled but faster now, his composure intact on the outside, yet something far more restless building underneath, something that refused to settle, something that had no name yet demanded to be acknowledged.

Outside—

The night stretched endlessly.

Adrian walked without direction, his thoughts heavier now, sharper, replaying everything—her silence, her endurance, the way she looked at his father, the way she listened, the way she softened for someone else in a way she never had for him.

That—

Didn’t sit right.

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Faint.

A voice.

He stopped instantly.

Turned.

Followed it.

Step by step, the sound grew clearer, weaving through the silence like something fragile yet unbreakable, something that didn’t belong to the world he knew, something that pulled him forward without effort.

And then—

He saw her.

Nyra.

Sitting near the lake, her figure small against the vast darkness, her knees drawn slightly closer, her hands resting loosely as she stared ahead, completely unaware of his presence, completely lost in the moment she had created for herself.

Fireflies drifted around her, their soft golden glow flickering in the air like fragments of something unreal, illuminating her just enough to make the scene feel almost untouched by the harshness of reality, as if this place belonged only to her.

And she was singing.

Softly.

Brokenly.

“When the night feels too heavy to hold,

And your heart forgets how to be whole,

Close your eyes… I’m still right here,

Even in silence… even in fear.

If the world turns cold and you fall apart,

Listen closely… I’m in your heart,

A whisper soft… a light so true,

No matter how far… I’m with you…”

Her voice trembled, the last note fading into the night as tears slipped silently down her face, unnoticed by her, her emotions finally escaping in the only place she felt safe enough to let them.

Adrian didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Because this—

This was not the girl he knew in the office.

Not the one who argued.

Not the one who endured.

This was someone else entirely.

Someone fragile.

Someone real.

Someone—

Breaking in silence.

And something inside him—

Shifted.

Because the thought that lingered now—

Was not about control.

Not about testing her.

But about something far more dangerous.

The fact that he didn’t want anyone else to see her like this.
