CH - 33 " CONTROL IS SLIPPING "

The entire office felt different the moment Nyra stepped inside, not because anything visible had changed, but because the silence itself had gained weight, pressing against her senses in a way that made every step feel more noticeable, every breath slightly heavier, as though the space around her had become aware of something she could no longer pretend had not happened.

She walked in the same way she always did—calm, composed, controlled—but inside, her thoughts refused to stay still, circling back again and again to that moment, to the way Adrian’s hand had closed around her wrist, to the way it had not felt accidental, to the way she had not pulled away immediately.

That was the part she could not understand.

That was the part that stayed.

“Walking into danger this early in the morning is a bold choice.”

Nyra slowed slightly before turning her head.

Felix stood near the glass corridor, leaning casually as if he had all the time in the world, his posture relaxed but his gaze sharp enough to miss nothing, especially not her.

“I don’t remember asking for commentary,” Nyra replied, her tone calm, though her attention stayed on him longer than necessary.

Felix let out a soft breath that almost sounded like a quiet laugh, straightening slightly as he stepped closer, not invading her space but close enough to make his presence clear.

“You didn’t,” he admitted, “but sometimes the things you don’t ask for are the ones you should probably listen to the most, especially in a place where silence hides more than words ever reveal.”

Nyra’s brows pulled together slightly.

“And what exactly am I supposed to understand from that?” she asked, her voice steady but edged with curiosity she didn’t intend to show.

Felix tilted his head slightly, his eyes flickering toward Adrian’s office before returning to her.

“That when someone like Adrian starts paying attention to you,” he said slowly, each word deliberate, “it’s never something small, never something temporary, and definitely not something you can walk away from without consequences.”

The words settled deeper than she expected.

Nyra didn’t respond immediately.

Before she could—

“Nyra.”

That voice.

Low.

Controlled.

Unmistakable.

She turned instantly.

Adrian stood at his office door, his gaze locked directly on her, sharp and unreadable, yet carrying something beneath it that felt heavier than authority, something darker, something far more personal than it should have been.

Felix glanced between them once, a faint knowing expression crossing his face before he stepped aside.

“You’re being called,” he murmured under his breath, just low enough for her to hear. “And trust me… he doesn’t like waiting.”

Nyra didn’t respond.

She walked toward Adrian.

Each step felt measured, controlled, yet her heartbeat picked up slightly with every inch she closed between them, not from fear, but from the awareness that whatever waited inside that room would not be simple.

She knocked.

Entered.

Closed the door behind her.

The silence was immediate.

Heavy.

Almost suffocating.

Adrian didn’t speak right away.

He stood near the window, his posture composed, but the moment she entered, he turned fully toward her, his gaze settling on her with a sharpness that made it clear he had been watching long before she walked in.

“You seem comfortable,” he said finally, his voice low, controlled, but carrying an edge that made the words feel heavier than they should have.

Nyra held his gaze.

“I was having a conversation,” she replied, her tone calm, though her fingers curled slightly at her side.

Adrian took a step forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

“And you found it necessary to continue that conversation,” he said, his voice lowering further, “despite knowing exactly where you are, and more importantly, who you are speaking to.”

Nyra’s expression tightened slightly.

“I don’t need permission to speak to someone,” she said, her words measured but firm.

That was enough.

Adrian closed the remaining distance between them in a way that felt intentional, not rushed, not careless, but controlled in a way that made it more intense, more suffocating, more impossible to ignore.

Before she could react—

His hand closed around her wrist.

This time slower.

Stronger.

Undeniably intentional.

Nyra’s breath caught sharply, her body reacting instantly, the sudden warmth of his touch sending a sharp awareness through her, her heartbeat rising faster than before, her thoughts scattering for a brief second as her focus narrowed to nothing but the point where his fingers held her.

He didn’t let go.

Instead—

He stepped closer.

So close that the space between them disappeared completely, so close that she could feel the warmth of him, the intensity of his presence wrapping around her in a way that made it harder to think, harder to breathe normally.

“You don’t seem to understand something,” Adrian said quietly, his voice lower now, edged with something darker, something less controlled.

Nyra forced herself to breathe steadily, even though her chest rose unevenly.

“And what exactly is that?” she asked, her voice softer now, not weaker—but affected.

His grip tightened slightly.

“That I don’t tolerate distractions around me,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers, “and I definitely don’t tolerate them around you.”

Silence.

Nyra felt it again—that confusion, that pull, that strange contradiction building inside her, because instead of fear, there was something else layered beneath it, something she could not explain.

“This isn’t about work,” she said quietly.

Adrian leaned even closer.

“And yet you’re still standing here,” he replied.

That hit.

Nyra’s breath faltered for just a second, her fingers tightening slightly, her body caught between reacting and resisting, between stepping back and holding her ground.

“You’re crossing a line,” she said softly.

“And you didn’t stop me,” he answered just as quietly.

The silence that followed was heavier than anything before it.

Because he wasn’t wrong.

Nyra’s heartbeat pounded harder now, her thoughts no longer steady, her senses too aware of him, too aware of how close he was, too aware of the way her body responded in ways she did not understand.

“I’m not yours,” she said, though the words came out softer than she intended.

A pause.

Adrian’s gaze darkened slightly.

“Not yet,” he murmured.

Before anything else could happen—

A knock interrupted the moment.

“Sir, the meeting is ready,” Clara’s voice came from outside.

Adrian let go.

Not Immediately.

The distance returned.

But the tension didn’t.

“I’ll be there,” he said coldly.

Nyra stepped back this time, creating space between them, though her pulse hadn’t settled, though her wrist still felt warm, as if his touch had left something behind.

She turned.

Walked out.

But her steps were no longer steady.

Evening came slower than usual, the weight of the day dragging behind her as Nyra finally left the office, the city lights already glowing against the darkening sky, yet her mind refused to quiet, replaying everything, questioning everything.

That feeling returned again.

Like someone was there.

Watching.

Following.

She turned once.

Then again.

Nothing.

But the unease stayed.

By the time she reached her house, her thoughts were already too loud, too tangled, too restless.

“Late again,” her uncle’s voice cut through the air the moment she stepped inside, sharp and disapproving.

Nyra didn’t respond.

Her aunt scoffed loudly, “Working or wasting time, it’s all the same with you.”

Her cousin added, laughing lightly, “Maybe she’s busy impressing someone.”

Nyra’s jaw tightened.

“I was working,” she said quietly.

“How much are you earning then?” her uncle demanded, stepping closer, his tone harsh. “Or is that also something you’re hiding?”

Nyra lowered her gaze slightly.

“I’ll tell you when it’s finalized,” she replied.

“Always excuses,” her aunt muttered.

Nyra didn’t argue.

Didn’t react.

She walked to her room.

Closed the door.

And only then—

The silence returned.

She sat on the edge of her bed slowly, her hand lifting almost unconsciously to her wrist, her fingers resting exactly where his had been, where the warmth still lingered in a way that didn’t make sense.

Her breathing became uneven.

Not from fear.

But from confusion.

“Why…” she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible in the quiet room, “…why did it feel like that?”

Her mind replayed the moment again.

The way he had held her.

The way he had stepped closer.

The way she had not pulled away.

And then—

A realization she didn’t want to accept.

She hadn’t felt unsafe.

Her fingers tightened slightly against her wrist.

“In a place where I should feel threatened…” she murmured slowly, her thoughts unraveling one by one, “…why did it feel like I wasn’t in danger at all?”

The question stayed.

Unanswered.

Because that feeling—

That strange, dangerous sense of safety—

Was far more terrifying than fear itself.
