The next day did not begin gently.
It arrived with a suffocating weight—heavy, pressing, and utterly unavoidable—settling over the room like the grim aftermath of a catastrophe that had already altered the trajectory of her life too profoundly to ever be undone.
Nyra had barely slept a wink, her mind dragged ruthlessly back into the abyss of yesterday every single time she attempted to close her heavy eyelids. She was trapped in a recurring nightmare of the suffocating panic, the helpless terror, and then, inevitably, him.
Adrian.
She couldn't banish the memory of the way his lethal, commanding voice had cuttingly severed through the chaos, or the terrifyingly possessive way his arms had locked around her body, holding her as if the rest of the world were a threat he had personally forbidden from ever touching her again.
It defied all logic, and she despised things that escaped her control and comprehension.
Morning manifested not with light, but with an agonizing, sharp pain that pulled a ragged, quiet gasp from her lips the exact moment she attempted to force herself upright.
Her hand immediately pressed hard against her lower stomach as her body curled protectively inward, her breathing tightening into shallow, fractured gasps against a relentless wave of physical misery that refused to subside.
“Seriously… today?”
she muttered into the empty space of her room, but the oppressive silence offered no answer, just as it never did.
Still, she forced her feet to the floor and stood up, because survival meant moving forward, and she had never allowed her own weakness to dictate her terms.
By the time she navigated the cold corridors of the office, the pain had morphed into a dull, constant ache—
a background noise she could violently suppress if she locked her jaw and willed herself hard enough to ignore it.
“Good morning,” Clara said, her voice unusually subdued.
“Morning,” Nyra replied, keeping her voice clipped and empty.
Clara observed her with an unsettling, meticulous intensity this time, her gaze lingering a beat too long on Nyra’s pale complexion and rigid posture before she spoke again, her tone dropping into a cautious whisper.
“Be careful today.”
Nyra’s brow furrowed, a flicker of irritation cutting through her fatigue.
“What does that even mean?”
Clara offered no explanation, choosing instead to pivot to the inevitable executioner's blade.
“Mr. Voss wants to see you.”
Nyra exhaled a slow, bitter breath; of course he did, for he was a storm that refused to let her find shelter.
When she knocked and entered the inner sanctum of his office, Clara was already standing inside like a ghost awaiting orders.
Adrian stood like a monolith near his massive desk, his posture impeccably composed and his dark presence occupying the room so completely it felt difficult to breathe.
The absolute second Nyra’s heel clicked inside the threshold, his predatory eyes snapped to her, sharp and calculating, dissecting her appearance as if he were scanning a map for vulnerabilities.
“Close the door,”
he commanded, the low frequency of his voice vibrating through the floorboards.
She obeyed, the heavy click of the lock sounding ominously permanent.
“For the next few days,”
Adrian announced, his calm, professional veneer doing nothing to mask the absolute authority in his delivery as he addressed them both,
“you will be working from here.”Nyra’s frown deepened as a spike of defiance flared within her.
“In your office?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked down at her, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute certainty.
“Because I decided it.”
Her irritation, volatile and dangerous, surged to the surface. “That’s not a reason.”
While Clara remained frozen in a disciplined, submissive silence, Adrian didn’t even blink at Nyra's insolence;
he merely held her defiant gaze with a chilling, magnetic focus. “It is enough,”
he replied, his words laced with a quiet finality that brooked no further treason.Nyra was the first to tear her eyes away, not out of a sense of submission, but because a sudden, violent spasm in her abdomen threatened to buckle her knees, making it impossible to sustain the energy required to fight him the way she normally would.
“Clara,” Adrian murmured smoothly, breaking the suffocating silence, “bring the files from yesterday.”
Clara nodded quickly and vanished, leaving the heavy mahogany door to click shut behind her.Instantly, the oxygen in the room seemed to evaporate.
Adrian did not speak immediately;
instead, he began to move toward her, his footsteps slow, deliberate, and entirely predatory, narrowing the distance between them like a hunter cornering a wounded creature.
“You’re not fine,”
he stated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.Nyra let out a sharp, defensive breath, crossing her arms tightly.
“Not this again.”
“You’re ghost-pale,”
he continued ruthlessly, ignoring her sharp tongue entirely as he stepped closer, his intense focus narrowing down until it felt like a physical weight upon her chest.
“And you’ve been pressing your hand against your stomach since the moment you crossed my threshold.”
Annoyed and feeling entirely exposed, Nyra immediately dropped her hand to her side, her knuckles turning white.
“I said I’m fine.”
“No,” he countered softly, stepping so deep into her personal space that the air between them grew hot and restrictive,
“you are merely pretending to be fine, and you are terrible at it.”
Her fragile patience snapped under the weight of his scrutiny.
“Why are you even paying this much attention to me?”
she shot back, her voice shaking slightly as anger and physical pain bled into a volatile mix.
“Since when do you notice anything about what I do?”
A suffocating pause stretched between them, the silence thick with an unspoken, hazardous tension. Adrian didn’t answer right away.
Instead,
he took one final step forward, completely invading her space until she was forced to tilt her chin up just to look into his dark eyes.
“Since yesterday,”
he murmured, the words echoing with a sinister, heavy weight that effectively paralyzed her tongue.
“Because yesterday,”
he continued, his voice dropping into an intimate, growling register that sent a shiver straight down her spine,
“you weren’t just uncomfortable, Nyra… you were fracturing right in front of my eyes, breaking into pieces.”
He leaned a fraction closer, his shadow consuming her entirely.
“And I do not ignore things that belong in my orbit.”
Her heartbeat picked up a frantic, erratic rhythm—an annoying, terrifying betrayal of her own biology that she couldn't control.
“I don’t need you to watch over me,” she whispered defensively, her voice losing its edge but retaining its desperate shield.
“I can handle myself.”
“I know you can,”
he whispered back, the unexpected validation catching her completely off guard.
“But that doesn’t mean I am going to sit back and let you suffer alone.”
Before the dangerous intimacy of his words could fully unarm her, the heavy door swung open and Clara walked back into the room, fracturing the spell.
Instantly, Adrian retreated a step, his mask of corporate indifference slipping back into place so effortlessly it was terrifying.
“Sit,”
he ordered coldly, gesturing toward the leather couch. They moved to comply, but as Nyra lowered herself onto the cushions, a sudden, blinding wave of pain tore through her lower stomach, forcing her body to stiffen completely as her fingers instinctively clawed at her abdomen before she could stop the reflex.
Clara noticed immediately, her eyes softening with a gentle, knowing empathy.
“You okay?” Clara asked softly.Nyra hesitated, hating the vulnerability, before nodding subtly.
“Period,” she muttered, keeping her answer short to discourage any further prying.Clara’s expression softened into deep sympathy.
“Day one?”Nyra merely nodded, swallowing down a wave of nausea.
“It’s worse today.”
They attempted to lose themselves in the heavy stacks of paperwork, but Nyra’s focus was entirely shattered. Every few minutes, her hand would betray her, migrating back to press against her aching stomach or massage her lower back, her subtle shifts of discomfort broadcasting her agony across the silent room.
Adrian noticed every microscopic flinch, his dark eyes tracking her movements with an observant, heavy stillness, yet he remained silent.
Then,
the sudden, shrill ring of Clara’s phone shattered the quiet. Clara answered, and within seconds, the color completely drained from her face, terror washing over her features.
“My father… he’s been rushed to the hospital,”
she stammered, panic threatening to choke her words.Ignoring the agonizing protest of her own body, Nyra stood up instantly.
“Go. Right now.”
“But the files—”“I will handle everything,” Nyra insisted, her voice ringing with absolute, fierce authority.
Adrian stepped forward, his commanding presence sealing the directive.
“Take two days, Clara. Go.”
Grateful and weeping silently, Clara grabbed her things and fled, the door slamming shut behind her.The silence returned, heavier and more dangerous than before.
Now, the walls felt closer, locking the two of them into a private, lawless domain where the rules of the outside world no longer applied.
Adrian looked at her, his gaze longer, darker, and infinitely more focused as something hidden clicked behind his eyes. Without uttering a single word, he turned on his heel and walked out of the office.
Nyra sank back onto the couch, her irritation flaring through her exhaustion.
“What now…”
she muttered, pressing a hand to her throbbing temples.
When the door opened again minutes later, Adrian strode back into the room holding a sleek black bag, his aura radiating an uncompromising demand for compliance that immediately set her on edge.
“What is that?” she demanded sharply.“Open it,” he replied, his tone flat and unyielding.
“I am not opening random things you decide to drag in here—”
“Nyra.”
The way her name left his lips—low, firm, and carrying the weight of an absolute command—effectively cut off her tirade.
Rolling her eyes to hide the tremor in her hands, she unzipped the bag and froze. Inside sat a pristine arrangement of heavy-duty pain relief pads, premium dark chocolate, a high-end electronic heating wrap, and a pair of plush, soft slippers.
Instead of feeling touched, a furious surge of humiliation and anger rushed through her veins, her irritation doubling in an instant.
“Are you mocking me right now?”
she spat, glaring up at him with a gaze meant to incinerate.
“You need it, therefore you will use it,”
he replied with an infuriating, cool calmness.
“No, I do not need you to humiliate me by procuring these things,”
she snapped, violently pushing the bag away from her on the cushion.
“This is entirely uncalled for, it crosses every professional boundary, and honestly—it is far too much.”
“It is basic necessity,”
he countered, his dark eyes locking onto hers.
“It is not your damn job to take care of my body!”
she shot back, her voice rising in tandem with the chaotic rhythm of her pulse.“Maybe I have decided that everything involving you is my job,”
he replied casually, the terrifying possessiveness of his words hanging in the air like a noose. That statement made her vision go red with pure, unadulterated frustration.
Driven by a desperate need to break through his unbothered, arrogant demeanor,
she grabbed a heavy leather accent pillow from the couch and threw it directly at his chest with all the strength she could muster.
He caught it effortlessly with one hand, his expression unchanging, before tossing it casually back onto the opposite side of the couch.
Enraged by his lack of reaction, she grabbed another pillow, striking him squarely in the chest as she stood up, trying to force him back.
But Adrian merely absorbed the blow, taking a slow, predatory step closer into her space.
Nyra retreated a step, her back pressing against the arm of the couch.
“Don’t start this, MR.EXPENSIVE SHIT..... I mean it.”
“You are the one who initiated this war,”
he murmured, taking another agonizingly slow step forward until he completely dominated her field of vision. She swung another pillow in pure desperation, but this time, as Adrian stepped forward to intercept it, his polished dress shoe caught slightly on the edge of the thick rug.
In an instant, the calculated control vanished, and his heavy, muscular frame pitched forward, crashing directly down onto her.
The impact wasn't brutal, but the absolute, crushing proximity of his body was staggering.
Nyra’s breath was violently knocked from her lungs, her mind short-circuiting as she found herself entirely pinned beneath him on the deep cushions of the couch.
Adrian’s left hand slammed hard against the leather right beside her head, his knuckles white as he braced his weight, while his other arm locked beside her hip, effectively trapping her in a cage of solid muscle and dark fabric.
He wasn't touching her completely, yet he was hovering so close that she could feel the scorching,
hazardous heat radiating through his shirt.Their faces were mere inches apart.
Way too close.
Destructively close.
Nyra’s heartbeat raced completely out of control, a frantic drumming in her ears as her fingers instinctively bunched into the dark, expensive fabric of his shirt, her breath hitching in her throat as she tried to process how terrifyingly fast the room had shifted from petty irritation to a dark, suffocating danger.
Adrian didn’t pull away.
He didn't even attempt to correct his posture.
Instead, his heavy, dark gaze dropped briefly to her trembling lips, lingering there with a stark, predatory hunger before dragging back up to lock onto her wide, dilated eyes.
His expression was a storm of intense, unreadable dominance.
“Are you still going to lie to my face and tell me you’re fine?”
he asked quietly, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that brushed intoxicatingly against her skin.
Nyra swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling rapidly against his.
“Get off me,” she whispered,
her voice lacking any real venom, reduced to a desperate plea for survival.“Not until you stop lying to yourself, and to me,”
he murmured, his gaze darkening further as he leaned down a millimeter closer, his scent completely filling her senses and erasing the rest of the world.
Her breath hitched, a soft, broken sound.
“You are a mentally ill man mr. voss... You're impossible.”
“And you are entirely too stubborn for your own good,”
he replied, his thumb brushing against the leather couch right beside her cheek, a ghost of a touch that felt like a brand.
Neither of them moved.
For a endless, agonizing moment, the air hung thick with a dangerous promise, a silent acknowledgement of a dark threshold that neither of them was truly ready to cross, yet both were desperately craving.
Nyra finally tore her face to the side, breaking the suffocating spell of his gaze as tears of frustration and overwhelming sensation pricked the corners of her eyes.
“Mr. Voss,” she whispered, her voice fracturing under the weight of his dominance.
“Please. Move.”
The soft plea finally broke through his iron restraint.
Slowly, deliberately, he pulled his body back, unraveling himself from her frame, but not before casting one final, lingering look down at her exposed, trembling form.
And that look stayed burned into her mind—because this time, it wasn't just corporate tension or a momentary lapse in judgment.
It was an unspoken vow of ownership, and it was far more dangerous than anything she had ever faced before.
