CH - 37 " UNSPOKEN RULES "

Nyra did not remember how she survived the remainder of the working hours that day.

The corporate chaos, the ringing of phones, the rustle of papers—it had all bled into a muted, inconsequential blur.

She remembered only him.

The terrifying, breathless precision of the way he had fallen. The crushing, suffocating weight of his body hovering mere inches over hers, a sudden eclipse that stole the air right out of her lungs.

She could still feel the phantom vibration of his hand pressing violently into the fabric of the couch beside her head, trapping her body, seizing her autonomy, without his skin ever actually making contact with hers.

And the way his eyes had dropped.

Just for a single, agonizing second.

To her lips.

Her breath hitched painfully even now at the memory.

She sat frozen on the leather couch inside Adrian’s sprawling office the following afternoon, an open file resting heavy on her lap. Her eyes swept across the printed words in a meaningless rhythm, completely unable to process a single syllable while her fingertips tightened around the edge of the paper, crumpling it slightly as her traitorous mind dragged her backward into the dark.

“Focus,”

she rasped under her breath, the whisper a desperate plea to her own fractured sanity. But the mental walls she tried to erect collapsed instantly.

No matter how fiercely she fought to anchor herself to reality, the memory dragged her back into the abyss of yesterday.

It had been too close.

Too intense.

Too inherently dangerous.

And the most unsettling realization—the thought that clawed at her conscience and left her feeling utterly exposed—was that she hadn’t pushed him away.

She hadn’t even tried.Across the room, Adrian stood anchored behind his massive mahogany desk, flipping through legal documents with a calm, chillingly unreadable expression.

He looked entirely unaffected, moving with a cold precision that suggested nothing out of the ordinary had occurred,

as if he hadn’t been a fraction of an inch away from shattering a line neither of them had the courage to name.

Yet, his attention wasn’t fully on the paperwork.

The subtle, heavy shift of his gaze kept wandering.

Back to her.

Nyra felt the pressure of his eyes like a physical touch, a low hum of electricity skittering across her bare skin every single time he looked up.

Her grip tightened on the folder as she shifted uncomfortably against the cushions,

her hand moving unconsciously to press against her lower stomach to soothe the sudden, nervous knot tightening there before she forced her arm back down, gritting her teeth to maintain a rigid, unyielding posture.

The silence stretching inside his office today was entirely different from their usual quiet.

It was heavier, suffocating, entirely controlled.

This was his sanctuary, governed by his unspoken rules and dominated by a predatory presence that demanded absolute submission from anyone who dared cross the threshold.

A sharp, sudden knock shattered the silence.

Nyra’s head snapped upward instantly, her defensive instincts on high alert.

Adrian didn’t even blink.

He didn’t lift his head from the page.“Come in,” he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that offered no warmth.

The heavy door clicked open, and a mid-level employee stepped inside. The man’s posture went rigidly straight the absolute second his foot crossed the threshold, his expression morphing into one of extreme caution, his footsteps measured and tentative.

No one walked into Adrian’s territory casually; the very air in the room warned against it.

“Good morning, sir,” the employee murmured, keeping his distance.

Adrian offered nothing more than a minimal, glacial nod, his eyes remaining fixed on the document beneath his pen.

There was a tense pause.

A heavy, uncertain hesitation as the employee held a stack of papers, trying to gauge the mood in the room.

And then,

he made a critical, fatal mistake. The man’s gaze drifted away from the desk, shifting directly toward Nyra, and he took two deliberate steps closer to her couch.

“Nyra, I needed to ask you about the—”

“Stop.”The word wasn’t shouted.

It was delivered in a quiet, razor-sharp whisper that sliced through the room like a guillotine.

The employee froze mid-sentence, his foot hovering slightly before dropping back to the floor. Nyra’s chest tightened as she blinked, the sudden spike of danger in the room making her pulse skyrocket.

Adrian slowly, deliberately lifted his gaze.

He placed his fountain pen down on the desk with a quiet, menacing click before rising to his full height. His movements were unhurried, agonizingly controlled, but the atmospheric pressure in the room plummeted instantly, turning icy and hostile.

“You walked into my office,”

Adrian said, his voice level, dangerously devoid of emotion as he stepped out from behind the desk,

“and you decided to speak to someone without my explicit permission.”The employee swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing visibly as fear washed over his features.

“S-Sir, I was just—”

“Just what?”

Adrian countered, his long strides closing the distance between them, his towering frame completely eclipsing the smaller man.No answer came.

The air was too thick for words, the silence stretching until the walls felt like they were closing in.

“You don’t ‘just’ do anything in here,”

Adrian continued, his tone dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying weight that seemed to strip the oxygen from the room.

“You ask. You wait. And only when I allow it, do you speak.”

“Yes, sir. I’m incredibly sorry, sir,”

the man stammered, stepping back slightly, his eyes glued to the floor.

Adrian stopped a mere breath away from him, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute dominance.

“What did you need?”

“I… I needed clarification on the client file Nyra handled yesterday,”

the man replied, his voice trembling.Adrian’s dark gaze slowly drifted away from the trembling employee, sliding across the room until it locked onto Nyra, pinning her to the leather cushions.“Answer him.”

Nyra managed a shallow nod, forcing her voice to remain steady, professional, and detached despite the erratic pounding of her heart.

She explained the technicalities quickly, her words concise, acutely aware that Adrian’s predatory gaze remained entirely fixed on her face the entire time she spoke.

“…so the projections were revised according to the client’s specific requirements,”

she finished, her voice dropping into the quiet room.

The employee nodded frantically.

“Thank you.”

This time, the man didn’t dare linger. He turned on his heel and exited the room immediately, the heavy timber door clicking shut behind him with an ominous finality.

The thick, suffocating silence rushed back to fill the void, tighter and more volatile than before.

Nyra stood up from the couch, turning to face Adrian immediately, her temper finally flaring through her fear.

“You didn’t have to do that,” she said, her voice low but sharp with suppressed irritation.

Adrian didn’t answer right away. Instead, he began to walk toward her.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

“You don’t get to decide what I have to do,”

he said, his eyes darkening as he tracked her movements.

Nyra frowned, refusing to back down even as her instincts screamed at her to retreat.

“He was just asking a professional question, Mr. Voss.”

“He spoke without my permission.”

“That’s not a crime!”

she shot back, her defensive walls fracturing under the sheer weight of his approach.

“In this office,”

Adrian murmured, stopping a mere inches from her, his shadow completely enveloping her, “it is.”

Her breath hitched violently.

He was too close.

Why was he always this close, invading her space until she could smell the cedar and smoke clinging to his suit?

“You’re overreacting,” she whispered, her voice losing its edge, turning breathless.

“Am I?” he asked, his head tilting slightly, his gaze tracking the rapid pulse fluttering at the base of her throat.

“Yes,”

she insisted, her hands clenching into fists at her sides to hide their trembling.

“You didn’t have to make it a display of power. It wasn't a big deal.”

Adrian’s gaze darkened to a dangerous, midnight black, his jaw tightening as he leaned in closer, trapping her against the edge of the desk behind her.

“He stood too close to you.”Nyra blinked, her mind scrambling to process the raw, unfiltered possessiveness in his tone.

“That’s… that’s what this is about?”

He didn’t deny it. He didn’t even attempt to hide the dark, twisted jealousy bleeding through his cold exterior. “He shouldn’t feel comfortable enough to stand within arm's reach of you. None of them should.”

Nyra let out a sharp, disbelieving breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly against the narrow space separating them.

“I was just doing my job, Mr. voss .”

“And I am telling you to do it differently,”

he growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, intimate register as he took that final step, eliminating every inch of sanctuary she had left.

Her heartbeat was a chaotic, deafening roar in her ears. “You don’t control how I behave around other people.

You don't own me.”

Adrian stopped, his chest nearly brushing against hers, close enough that the heat radiating from his body seared through her clothing.

“That’s where you’re entirely wrong,” he whispered against her skin.

Her chest tightened, a suffocating knot locking her lungs into stasis. Because as the words left his mouth—His gaze dropped.

Just for a second.

To her lips.

And this time, he didn’t pull his eyes away. He lingered there, staring at the slight parting of her mouth, his focus intense, heavy, and deliberately agonizing.

“I don’t like it,” he murmured, the admission low, dark, and utterly territorial. The words did something wicked to her insides, a terrifying thrill sparking in her veins that she couldn’t comprehend and desperately wanted to deny.

“Mr . Voss…” she breathed, her voice trembling as she tried to find her footing in a game where he held all the cards, “this isn’t your place to make those demands.”

“Maybe not,”

he conceded, his voice a ghost of a caress against her face.

“But you are still standing in my space.”

The declaration settled heavily between them, a thick, suffocating vow. It was possessive.

Toxic.

Unavoidable.

Nyra was the first to break, tearing her eyes away because she simply couldn't withstand the raw intensity of his gaze.

Not when her mind kept flashing back to the day before.

Of how close he had been.

Of how his body had felt hovering over hers. And the terrifying, dark truth that she had to live with—that she hadn’t stopped him.

“Get back to work,”

Adrian commanded suddenly, his voice instantly reverting to that cold, professional mask as he stepped back, giving her room to breathe. She forced her numb legs to move, retreating to her desk, but her hands were no longer steady.

The papers rattled in her grasp, a blatant betrayal of her composure.Because it wasn’t just corporate tension anymore. It wasn’t just a clash of authority or professional irritation. This was something infinitely more dangerous.

The way Adrian looked at her didn’t feel like a temporary bid for control anymore.

It felt like a dark, permanent sentence—

something he had already decided in his mind, and something he had absolutely no intention of taking back.
