CH - 38 " A DEAL WRITTEN IN SILENCE "

Two months—

an eternity forged in the coldest depths of mutual exile. Sixty days had dissolved into a torturous exercise in psychological warfare, a period where the jagged, volatile confrontations that once defined the space between Nyra and Adrian were systematically dismantled and replaced by an agonizing, clinical silence.

They no longer traded sharp, venomous words in the shadowed corridors of the estate, nor did they engage in the exhausting luxury of open hostility. Instead, they had perfected the art of strategic avoidance, moving through the same grand, oppressive rooms like two hostile empires operating under a fragile, unspoken ceasefire.

Yet, the air between them remained thick, pressurized, and entirely unbreathable;

it was a physical entity that lingered in the heavy drape of the curtains, magnetized the space between their passing shoulders, and charged every accidental glance with a lethal, suffocating intensity that whispered of a violence neither was ready to unleash.

Nyra aggressively weaponized her own indifference, rehearsing the lie that she had successfully erased his shadow from her mind, while Adrian simply permitted the delusion, watching her from the precipice of his terrifying, immaculate control—

perfectly content to let her believe she was escaping while he quietly built the walls of her cage.

_

“Adrian.”

The voice was low, laced with the unyielding gravity of an absolute ruler, slicing through the suffocating stillness of the study like a dull blade. Victor stepped further into the room, his presence commandingly dark, while Sebastian followed closely in his wake, a cruel, predatory smirk playing upon his lips like a man who had arrived early to an execution.

Adrian did not look up from the leather-bound folder open before him, his fingers remaining perfectly still against the stark white of the parchment, though his focus had long since abandoned the text, tethered entirely to the woman pacing three floors beneath his feet. “Hmm.”

“You have been avoiding this conversation with a persistence that is becoming uncharacteristic,” Victor stated, his tone dropping with the weight of a final decree.

“And yet, despite my absence, you still find yourself standing on my floor,” Adrian replied, his voice a flat, freezing octave that offered no room for negotiation.

Sebastian let out a soft, mocking chuckle, leaning his shoulder against the dark mahogany bookshelf with insolent ease. “Don’t play the ignorant martyr, Adrian. You knew the board would eventually demand a anchor, and frankly, reality has caught up with your little games. You need to get married.”

The room seemed to drop ten degrees in an instant, the silence stretching until it threatened to snap.

“No.”

The word was immediate, flat, and absolute—a barrier of solid ice.

Sebastian sighed theatrically, tilting his head with a look of profound amusement. “See? This is exactly why dealing with you is a masterclass in futility. You act as though you have an option.”

“I am not interested in your political arrangements,” Adrian countered, his eyes finally lifting, turning into two chips of polished flint.

Victor stepped closer, the shadows of the room catching the sharp angles of his face. “This has ceased to be a matter of your interest, Adrian; it is now a matter of absolute necessity. If you refuse to secure your position, the vultures will begin to tear at the edges of your territory.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened, a single, sharp muscle leaping under his pale skin. “I handle my own matters. Cleanly.”

“Do you?” Sebastian interjected, his voice dripping with venomous delight as he pushed himself away from the shelf. “Because from where I am standing, it looks very much like you are about to lose control of the one variable you thought you could keep chained in the dark.”

Adrian’s gaze snapped toward his brother, sharp enough to draw blood, his entire posture freezing into something predatory. “Speak clearly, Sebastian, or leave the room.”

Victor did not allow the distraction, stepping directly into Adrian’s line of sight. “If you do not act to claim what is yours, someone with less restraint will gladly take it from you. Especially when it comes to her.”

The air vanished from the study. The mere implication hung between them like a loaded weapon.

“…who?” Adrian whispered, the word barely a breath, yet it carried the weight of a death warrant.

“Nyra,” Victor delivered softly.

The name landed like a heavy stone into a deep, black well, and everything inside Adrian went entirely, lethally still.

Sebastian’s smirk widened, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. “Ah, there it is. The monster finally wakes up.”

Adrian completely ignored his brother, his focus locking entirely onto his father, his voice dropping into a register that was terrifyingly quiet. “What about her?”

“I saw her yesterday afternoon in the lower glass atrium,” Victor explained smoothly, his expression unreadable. “She was engaged with one of the junior partners from the marketing firm. Laughing. Smiling. Looking entirely too comfortable in the presence of a man who isn't you.”

That was the fracture point.

Adrian’s fingers curled into the edges of the desk, the leather groaning under the sudden, brutal pressure of his grip as a dark, possessive fury clawed at the back of his throat. “She works for the firm. She is required to interact with the staff.”

Sebastian laughed aloud, a sound edged with mocking pity. “Is that the comforting little lie you whisper to yourself at night? You don’t like it, Adrian. You hate the fact that someone else is standing within breathing distance of her, looking at her like she’s a prize, talking to her in a way you've denied yourself for sixty days.”

Silence returned, heavier and more suffocating than before.

Victor leaned in, delivering the final, crushing blow. “If you are not going to claim her, someone else will take her out from under your shadow. And when that happens, do not pretend you will be content to watch her belong to another man. Or perhaps you will… since you don't love her, correct?”

The words struck like a physical strike against a raw nerve.

Adrian stood up. The movement was agonizingly slow, calculated, and dripping with an unspoken, lethal promise that made even Sebastian’s smile falter slightly. He towered over the desk, the sheer mass of his presence suffocating the remaining light in the room.

“Enough.”

Sebastian’s smirk returned, though his eyes remained wary. “Then prove us wrong.”

Victor watched his son for a long, quiet moment, recognizing the dangerous shift in the air. “Marry her, Adrian. Secure what you have spent months obsessing over before someone else decides they have the right to touch it.”

The silence that followed was dense, dark, and irreversible. And this time, the word no never left Adrian’s lips.

The following morning greeted the estate with a gray, weeping sky that offered no warmth.

_

“Mr. Voss wants to see you in his office. Immediately.”

Nyra did not offer the assistant the courtesy of a reply; she simply stood up from her desk, her spine freezing into a rigid, unyielding line as she smoothed down her dark skirt and walked toward the double doors with the steady, measured pace of a woman marching toward a scaffold. She knocked once—a sharp, defiant sound—before entering and closing the heavy oak door firmly behind her, refusing to let the rest of the world witness her vulnerability.

“Why did you call me here?” she demanded, keeping her voice as cold and detached as humanly possible, her arms crossing over her chest like a shield.

Adrian turned slowly from the floor-to-ceiling windows, the bleak morning light catching the severe, predatory contours of his face as his dark eyes locked onto hers with a terrifying, absolute focus.

“Marry me.”

The words hung in the air between them, absurd and heavy. Nyra froze, her breath catching in her throat as her brain scrambled to process the sheer audacity of the statement. “…what?”

“Marry me,” he repeated, his voice devoid of any warmth, sounding more like an executioner reading a sentence than a man offering a proposal.

A sharp, bitter laugh escaped her lips, hollow and filled with disbelief. “You have lost your mind. You are completely insane.”

“I have never been more lucid in my life.”

“No,” she said immediately, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood as she turned back toward the exit. “Absolutely not. I am not a piece of property you get to acquire to settle whatever sick power game you are playing with your family.”

“It is for one year,” his voice cut through the distance between them, stopping her dead in her tracks.

Nyra’s hand hovered inches from the brass door handle. Slowly, agonizingly, she turned her head back to look at him over her shoulder, her eyes narrowed in deep suspicion. “What did you just say?”

“A contract marriage. Twelve months,” Adrian explained, stepping out from behind his desk and closing the distance between them with a predatory, silent grace that made her instincts scream at her to run. “A purely legal binding. After one year, the papers are dissolved, and you walk away with everything you could ever desire.”

Nyra shook her head, a cold dread beginning to pool in the pit of her stomach. “You don’t get to do this. You don’t get to treat a sacred vow like a corporate merger.”

“Everything in my world is a transaction, Nyra,” he countered, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped just two feet away from her, his sheer height blocking out the rest of the room. “And this is simply the most lucrative one I will ever offer you.”

“I am not doing this,” she whispered fiercely, turning her back on him completely to grab the handle—

“Riya.”

The name dropped between them like a guillotine blade, sharp, heavy, and dripping with an immediate, terrifying finality.

Nyra froze entirely, her body stiffening until her muscles properly ached, the color draining from her face so fast the room tilted slightly. She turned back to face him, her hands trembling as she looked up into his unyielding, dark eyes. “How do you know that name? I mentioned her once… a single time, in a whispered breath during my initial interview months ago.”

Adrian stepped closer, invading her personal space until she could feel the radiating, suffocating heat of his body wrapping around her like a shroud. “I make it my absolute business to know every single variable that dictates your breath, Nyra.”

“That is not your right!” she snapped, her mask of indifference completely shattering into a raw, bleeding panic. “You had no right to dig into my private life! You had no right to touch her name!”

“I had every justification,” he growled, his gaze dropping to her trembling lips before rising to pin her against the door with the sheer weight of his intensity.

“What else do you think you know?” she breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Adrian didn’t hesitate, leaning down slightly so his breath brushed against the sensitive skin of her ear, sending a cold shiver down her spine. “I know you are breaking your back to give that little girl a life you were brutally denied. I know you are drowning in quiet financial panic every single month, working yourself to the bone to ensure she can study without ever tasting the poverty that broke you. And I know,” he continued, his voice lowering into a dark, seductive purr, “that you are doing all of this while living in a wretched, decaying apartment that doesn’t even feel like it belongs to you.”

The absolute accuracy of his words felt like a physical violation, suffocating her. “How do you know that?” she whispered, tears of frustration and terror pricking the corners of her eyes.

Adrian didn’t answer her directly, his dark eyes consumption-hungry as they searched her face. “I can give her the security, the protection, and the future that you are currently destroying yourself to provide. I can give her everything you can’t.”

The statement hit too deep, tearing through her defenses and leaving a bleeding wound. Nyra’s eyes hardened with a desperate, defensive fury. “I don’t need a single thing from a freak like you.”

“That is a lie, and we both know it.”

“You don’t know anything about me!”

“I know enough,” he whispered, his hand rising slowly, his fingers hovering agonizingly close to her jawline without actually making contact, yet the phantom warmth was enough to make her dizzy.

“Enough to know that you are currently trying to protect her from a dangerous situation that has completely spun out of your control."

Nyra’s breath hitched, her throat going entirely dry. “…what?”

“Your uncle’s family,” Adrian murmured, the words containing a casual, devastating power. Her heart stopped completely, the blood rushing in her ears like a roaring tide.

“How do you know about them?” she whispered, her voice breaking under the weight of her terror.

“I told you,” he said, stepping so close his chest nearly brushed against hers, trapping her completely between his massive frame and the hard wood of the door. “I know everything. I can handle it, Nyra. Whatever debt they owe, whatever threats they are making, whatever shadow they are casting over your life—I can make it vanish with a single phone call. Your situation. Your family. Your safety. I will crush them all into dust.”

“And in return for my soul?” she asked softly, her voice trembling as she stared up into the beautiful, terrifying face of her captor.

“One year,” Adrian replied, his dark eyes gleaming with a fierce, possessive triumph. “Twelve months where you wear my ring, carry my name, and belong exclusively to me.”The silence that filled the room was heavy, dark, and utterly ruinous.

“You truly think I will agree to sell myself to you?” she asked, a final, desperate attempt to reclaim her dignity.

“No,” Adrian said quietly. The answer surprised her, her brow furrowing in confusion. “Then why are you doing this?”

“Because you are going to think about it,” he whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips once more with a lingering, dangerous promise. Her breath caught in her throat. Because, God help her, he was entirely right.

The dark temptation of safety, of throwing her burdens into his lap, was already taking root in her mind.

“Two days,” Adrian added, stepping back just enough to allow the freezing air of the room to settle between them again, though the invisible chains had already been wrapped tightly around her wrists.

“What?”

“I am giving you forty-eight hours to realize that you have no other choice.”

The silence that rushed back into the room was no longer empty; it was a living, breathing contract. Because this wasn't just a cruel proposal anymore. It was an inescapable descent into the dark, a dangerous trap that Adrian had meticulously laid out for her.

And for the first time in two torturous months, Nyra realized that she didn't have the strength to walk away from the monster standing in front of her.

Because a part of her—a terrifying, buried part of her—had already started to crave the cage.
