The night did not bring peace;
it brought a slow, agonizing suffocation. Nyra lay paralyzed beneath the heavy silence of her bedroom, her burning eyes fixed on the cracked plaster of the ceiling while her mind ran in vicious, relentless circles around the ultimatum that had destroyed her reality.
Marry me.
The words were a death sentence wrapped in velvet.
Her breath fractured in her chest, a ragged, broken thing as she rolled onto her side and hauled the thin blanket over her shoulders, desperately trying to construct a shield against the sheer, crushing weight of his shadow.
But the darkness inside her own mind was far more ruthless.
Riya.
The name hit her like a physical blow.
Nyra bolted upright, the air suddenly stripped from her lungs as her fingers clawed into her hair, pulling until her scalp burned, trying to anchor accessibility against the terrifying pressure building behind her ribs.
“How does he know… how does he know this much…”
she choked out, her voice splintering in the empty room.
Her wild, desperate gaze locked onto the bare wall, and in that fleeting, agonizing second, the last thread of her restraint snapped completely. Her fist collided with the plaster.
The impact sent a violent, blinding shockwave of pain up her arm, but the physical agony was a relief compared to the torment in her head.
“Why—!” Her knuckles struck the wall again, sharper, fueled by a raw, bleeding fury.
“—why now—!”
The force of her movement clipped the ceramic vase on the nightstand. It pitched over the edge, shattering against the hardwood floor into a thousand jagged, lethal shards.
Then came the silence—heavy, suffocating, and utterly broken.Nyra stood frozen in the wreckage, her chest heaving as a hot, dark line of blood welled across her split knuckles and began to drip slowly onto the floor.
She stared at the crimson stain, and a quiet, fractured laugh slipped past her lips—a sound hovering dangerously on the edge of madness. Then, her phone vibrated, slicing through the stillness.
She stiffened, her gaze dropping to the glowing screen. Riya calling…Instantly, the violent armor around her heart crumbled. She swallowed the copper taste of fear and answered, her voice a hollow shell of itself.
“Hello…”
“Sis…” Riya’s voice drifted through the line, soft, warm, and devastatingly innocent.
“You sound strange… didn't you sleep?”Nyra closed her eyes, the tears finally burning hot against her eyelids.
“Just work,” she lied softly.
“Don't lie to me,” Riya murmured gently, her sisterly intuition cutting straight through the facade. “I know your voice.”
A heavy pause stretched between them. Nyra sank slowly onto the edge of the mattress, completely ignoring the sharp glass pressing against the soles of her bare feet.
“…if someone offers you a choice,” Nyra whispered, the words dragging from her throat like broken glass, “something that alters the entire trajectory of your life… but it feels entirely wrong… what do you do?”
Silence lingered on the other end before Riya spoke,
her tone dropping into a fierce, protective softness. “I would only ask one thing, sis. Will it make your life easier… or harder?”
Nyra’s breath hitched, a sharp gasp catching in her throat.
Because the terrifying truth was that Adrian’s bargain would do both—it would save her from the wolves, only to lock her in a cage with the monster who ruled them.
“I don't know…” she breathed.
“Then don't try to carry the whole world at once,”
Riya said softly. “Just think about whether it will help you breathe a little easier. Even if it's just for a moment.”
Nyra closed her eyes, and for the very first time in her miserable life, she didn't calculate her own survival.
She thought of the fragile girl on the other end of the line.“I'll call you later,”
Nyra said, her voice hardening with an sudden, grim resolve.
“Okay… and sis? I trust you.”
The line went dead.
Nyra sat in the dark, the bleeding cuts on her hand forgotten. The choice was gone. The decision belonged to the man who held her sister's future in his hands.

Two days later,
the air inside the executive suite of the Morningstar empire was thick with unspoken tension.
Felix leaned back against the edge of the massive mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his chest as he studied the man sitting beneath the soft glow of the minimalist chandelier.
“You're truly going through with this?”
Felix asked, his voice laced with a dangerous curiosity.Adrian didn't look up from the tablet in front of him, his fingers moving with a cold, terrifying precision.
“Yes.”
Felix let out a low, grim whistle. “You really think a girl like her will willingly sign her life away to a man like you?”
Adrian finally lifted his gaze. His dark eyes were devoid of warmth, an abyss of absolute, unyielding certainty.
“She will.”
Before Felix could reply, a sharp knock echoed through the room.
“Come in,”
Adrian commanded, his voice a low baritone that seemed to alter the atmospheric pressure of the office. The heavy doors parted, and Nyra stepped inside.
Her expression was a mask of marble—too calm, too rigid, devoid of the frantic panic that had consumed her forty-eight hours ago.
Adrian’s predatory gaze immediately swept over her, tracking her posture, her defensive stride, until his eyes locked onto her right hand. The faint, purplish bruising and the raw, scabbed-over line across her knuckles stood out starkly against her pale skin.
For a terrifying fraction of a second, the temperature in the room plummeted.
A dark, lethal storm flickered in the depths of Adrian’s eyes, a possessive, dangerous fury that threatened to rip through his flawless composure. But as quickly as it flared, he buried it beneath a layer of impenetrable ice.
His face returned to a mask of unreadable control, as if he hadn't noticed the mark at all.
Felix, however, didn't miss the shift.
His eyes darted between them, a dangerous smirk playing at the edge of his mouth as he sensed the invisible, suffocating current pulling them toward each other.
“You've made your decision,” Adrian stated, the words less of a question and more of an execution.Nyra held his gaze, refusing to look away, forcing the tremor out of her voice.
“…yes.”
Adrian stared at her for a beat longer, his intense scrutiny dissecting her resolve, before he gave a single, definitive nod.
“Good.”
He slid the heavy parchment contract across the desk. It wasn't just a document; it was a bill of sale for her freedom. Nyra stared at the stark black ink, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked up the heavy fountain pen.
Without allowing herself to hesitate, she pressed the nib to the paper and signed her name,
binding her soul to his.
Adrian took the pen from her fingers, his cold skin brushing against hers for a fleeting second, sending a jolt of pure electricity through her veins.
He signed beneath her name with a fluid, aggressive stroke.
Felix exhaled a low breath from the corner. “Well… that escalated beautifully,” he murmured.
Adrian completely ignored him, his eyes remaining locked on Nyra as he stood up, his towering silhouette casting a long, dominant shadow over her.
“Come with me,” he ordered softly. The sleek, armored vehicle purred to a halt in front of the dilapidated suburban house. Nyra’s entire body went rigid against the leather seat, her expression fracturing into pure, unadulterated hostility.
“What are we doing here?”
she demanded, her voice tight.
“Packing your things,”
Adrian replied smoothly, not waiting for her compliance as he stepped out into the damp afternoon air.
The moment they breached the front door, the heavy stench of stale alcohol and generational resentment washed over them. Her uncle looked up from the television, his bloated face instantly twisting into an ugly, sneering grimace.
From the kitchen, her aunt stepped out, wiping her hands on a stained towel, her eyes hardening into slits the moment she saw Nyra.
Behind her leaned emma, Nyra’s cousin, her lips curled into a practiced, malicious smirk as she crossed her arms, eyeing Nyra’s expensive coat with immediate envy.
“So you finally crawled back,” her uncle spat, pushing himself out of his chair, his eyes gleaming with a twisted, domestic authority.
“Couldn't survive two days out there on your own, could you? Pathetic—”
“And who did you bring with you?” her aunt chimed in, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm as she glared at Adrian and Felix.
“Brought your little boyfriends to protect you? You always were a shameless girl, dragging filth into my house.”
Emma let out a sharp, mocking giggle. “Look at her, Mom. Probably selling herself just to pay for those clothes. She’s nothing but a burden who thinks she’s too good for us.”
Nyra braced herself, her hands clenching into fists as the familiar, suffocating weight of their abuse closed in.
But she never got the chance to endure it.
Adrian stepped directly into her uncle's line of sight, his massive frame completely shielding her, casting a long, terrifying shadow across the entire family.
“She is here to collect her belongings,”
Adrian announced. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a cold, crystalline gravity that caused the room's temperature to plummet. Her uncle let out a harsh, aggressive laugh, stepping right up to Adrian, entirely blind to the predator he was provoking.
“Belongings? Everything in this house belongs to me! She should be on her knees thanking us for not throwing her into the gutter years ago. A useless, ungrateful little bitch who—”
Crack
The sound was sickeningly loud.
Adrian’s movement was a blur of lethal, absolute precision
His fist collided with her uncle’s jaw, sending the older man crashing backward over the coffee table. Wood splintered, glass shattered, and her uncle collapsed onto the floor, groaning in agony as blood immediately welled from his split lip.
“Oh my god!” her aunt shrieked, rushing forward, her face turning pale with terror.
“You animal! You can't just come into my home and—”
Adrian didn't yell.
He merely turned his dark, bottomless eyes toward her.
The raw, primal promise of violence radiating from his silhouette was so absolute that the aunt’s voice died instantly in her throat. She stumbled backward, clutching her chest, completely paralyzed.
Emma’s malicious smirk vanished, replaced by a trembling, wide-eyed horror. She shrank against the wall, realizing in a single, terrifying second that the men standing in their living room operated completely outside the boundaries of the law.
Adrian stepped over the ruined table, standing over the groaning uncle. Slow, deliberate, and entirely unbothered, Adrian extended his foot, pressing the heel of his polished leather shoe firmly against the man’s throat.
He didn't crush it, but he applied just enough pressure to cut off the man's breath, forcing his face to turn a dark, frantic purple.
“Choose your next words with extreme caution,”
Adrian whispered, his tone dripping with a quiet, terrifying malice that made the entire house feel like a tomb. He leaned down slightly, his gaze piercing into the uncle's desperate eyes.
“You are speaking about MY WIFE.”
Nyra felt the air leave her lungs, her heart hammering violently against her ribs at the sheer, possessive weight of that word.
Wife.
Behind them, Felix leaned casually against the doorframe, his arms crossed. A thoroughly amused, dangerous smirk spread across his face as he watched the apex predator effortlessly corner its prey.
He didn't lift a finger; he didn't need to.Her uncle flailed weakly, nodding frantically in submission, tears of pure terror leaking from the corners of his eyes.Adrian kept his foot on the man's throat for three more agonising seconds, letting the lesson sink deep into his bones, before he calmly stepped back.
He adjusted the cuffs of his tailored suit jacket, entirely unruffled. He turned his head slightly, his gaze softening by a fraction as he looked down at Nyra.
“Pack your things,” he instructed softly.
She nodded rapidly, her survival instincts propelling her down the hallway away from the wreckage. Within minutes, she threw her meager life into a single suitcase, her hands shaking so violently she could barely close the zipper.
When she returned to the living room, her aunt and cousin were huddled together in the corner, weeping silently, too terrified to even look in Nyra's direction.
Her uncle lay wheezing on the floor, clutching his broken jaw.
As Adrian took the suitcase from Nyra's hand, her uncle managed to spit out a low, bitter curse from the floor, unable to completely suppress his lifelong spite.
“You'll regret... taking that piece of trash..."
Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. He didn't turn around completely, only casting a lethal, sideways glance over his shoulder that promised total annihilation.
“You will never see her again,”
Adrian stated, his voice a quiet, chilling vow.
“If you ever speak her name, breathe in her direction, or even look toward her shadow, I will return. And I won't leave you with just a broken jaw. Consider this your only warning.”
_
The iron gates of the Voss estate swung open, and the car glided up the winding, tree-lined driveway, stopping before a colossal, gothic mansion that looked more like a fortress than a home.
Nyra stepped out into the cool evening air, her breath catching in her throat as she stared up at the imposing stone structure. It was beautiful, dark, and utterly terrifying.Adrian stepped up beside her, his presence an inescapable weight at her back.
He didn't touch her, but she could feel the heat radiating from his body, staking his claim without a single word.
“This is your home for now,” Adrian murmured, his voice laced with a dark, possessive satisfaction.
And in that single, breathless moment, as the heavy front doors opened to welcome her into the dark, Nyra knew there was no going back.
The trap had closed, and
she belonged to him.
