Morning passed in a quiet, stifling haze. Nyra spent the early hours deliberately avoiding Adrian, keeping her distance, shielding her eyes, and offering nothing more than the absolute bare minimum of necessary communication. Yet, despite her best efforts to construct a wall between them, the silence hanging in the air was no longer empty or hollow; it had grown heavy with an unspoken, palpable weight that neither of them could ignore.
“Get ready,” Adrian’s deep voice suddenly cut through the quiet, echoing from the doorway.
Nyra looked up from her thoughts, the familiar spark of annoyance instantly flaring within her. “For what?” she demanded, her tone laced with suspicion.
“Lunch,” Adrian replied flatly.
Nyra’s brow furrowed in immediate defiance. “I’m not going.”
A tense pause stretched between them. Adrian didn’t react to her stubbornness, nor did he break his composure. “My aunt called and requested our presence,” he explained calmly. “It’s a family lunch.”
Crossing her arms firmly over her chest, Nyra shot back, “And that includes me because… why, exactly?”
Adrian fixed his gaze directly on her, his expression unyielding and absolute. “Because you are coming with me.” It was a simple, commanding statement that left no room for negotiation.
Nyra scoffed aloud at his arrogance. “I already told you, I said I’m not—”
“You have exactly twenty minutes,” he interrupted smoothly before turning his back on her, walking away as if the entire matter had already been definitively settled.
Nyra stared after him, burning holes into his retreating back. “You are completely impossible,” she muttered crossly.
“And you talk far too much,” his parting words drifted back to her.
“Fine!” she snapped loudly, throwing her hands up in defeat. “But I swear, if this turns into another exhausting interrogation, I am walking right out the door.”
A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched Adrian's lips as he walked away. “Noted.”
The drive to the estate was filled with their usual sharp banter and quick, biting replies. Yet, beneath the surface of their small arguments, the atmosphere felt noticeably softer than before—there was far less genuine anger fueling their words, replaced instead by a strange, undeniable sense of familiarity.
When they finally entered the grand Voss estate, the mansion was already alive with the sound of warm, welcoming voices, lighthearted laughter, and constant movement. Nyra stepped across the threshold, but the moment she looked around the room, she stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening in absolute disbelief.
“…riya?” she whispered under her breath.
Standing near the center of the living room was Riya, who turned around at the sound of her name. The very instant Riya’s eyes landed on Nyra, her entire face lit up with pure joy.
“Sis!” Riya cried out, rushing forward without a second thought and pulling her sister into a fiercely tight embrace.
Nyra hugged her back instantly, squeezing her even tighter as the initial shock washed over her. “What on earth are you doing here?” Nyra asked, pulling back slightly to look at her sister. “You are supposed to be miles away in Italy right now!”
Riya smiled brightly, her eyes sparkling. “I am supposed to be there,” she laughed lightly, “but I managed to come back for a few days.”
Nyra frowned, a sudden wave of confusion hitting her. “But you didn't even bother to tell me you were coming—”
“That’s because I didn't know about it either,” Riya admitted with a soft chuckle. “Someone else completely arranged the entire trip for me.”
Slowly, Nyra’s gaze shifted away from her sister, her eyes locking onto Adrian who stood just a few steps away. He was perfectly calm, silently watching the reunion unfold. Realization suddenly dawned on her.
“You… you called her?” Nyra asked, her voice dropping to a stunned whisper.
Adrian didn't even attempt to deny it. He met her gaze evenly and replied, “I simply thought you would appreciate the surprise.”
That single admission caught Nyra completely off guard, leaving her temporarily speechless as she just blinked up at him, unable to find her words.
“Now, that is quite enough talking at the front door,” Victor’s warm, booming voice interrupted them as he walked over to welcome them properly. “Let them come inside and join the rest of us.”
Nyra turned to look at Victor, who greeted her with a proud, gentle smile. “Welcome to our home, dear,” he said warmly.
Elena walked forward next, wrapping Nyra in a soft, comforting hug. “You look terribly tired, my dear,” she murmured gently, pulling back to look at her face. “Tell me, are you taking proper care of yourself?”
Nyra nodded slightly, touched by the genuine concern. “Yes, I am.”
Sebastian then stepped into the fray, wearing a wide, knowing grin as if he had been waiting all day for this exact moment. “Well, well, well…” he began, his eyes fixed playfully on Nyra. “So here is the remarkable girl who finally managed to make our boy do something that the rest of us never could.”
Nyra blinked in surprise, realizing the family was already well aware of recent events. “He already knew,” she thought to herself. Of course he did.
“I was honestly starting to think Adrian would remain stubborn and impossible forever,” Sebastian added, tossing a teasing glance in his nephew's direction. “But then you came along and changed everything.”
“Uncle,” Adrian warned, his tone dropping an octave.
“What?” Sebastian shrugged defensively, completely unfazed by the glare. “I am merely giving credit where credit is due.”
Despite her lingering tension, Nyra couldn't stop the small, amused smile from breaking across her lips.
“And once again, I am left playing the role of the ignored sibling,” Alex complained dramatically from behind them. He walked into the room with a massive grin plastered on his face, giving Adrian a quick nod. “Hi, bhai,” he said, before turning his full attention to Nyra. “Tell me the truth, how have you actually survived living with him up until now?”
Nyra smirked slightly, matching his playful energy. “Barely, if I'm being completely honest.”
Alex burst out laughing, thoroughly delighted by her response. “now that's like my sister in law.”
Lunch commenced shortly after, and contrary to Nyra's anxieties, it was anything but quiet. The dining room felt vibrant and alive, filled to the brim with Victor sharing fond stories of old memories while Sebastian took every available opportunity to relentlessly tease Adrian.
“Elena, just look at him over there,” Sebastian remarked loudly, gesturing toward his nephew. “He is being quiet again, which means he is either secretly planning something incredibly dangerous or he's just pretending that he doesn't care about what we're saying.”
“He never pretends,” Elena countered calmly, knowing her nephew far too well.
Meanwhile, further down the table, Alex leaned in close to Riya and whispered conspiratorially, “Don't worry about Adrian's mood. Eventually, you’ll get completely used to him.”
Riya glanced sideways at him, her expression cool and collected. “I have absolutely no intention of planning to get used to him.”
Alex’s grin only widened at her sharp retort. “Well, let’s wait and see about that.”
Throughout the meal, Nyra sat quietly during the bursts of conversation, content to just watch and listen to the dynamics playing out around her. There was a warmth in the room that felt entirely foreign to her—this lively, chaotic family gathering felt like a piece of a world she had never truly possessed.
Once lunch concluded, the elders migrated to the lounge to converse together, but Nyra stayed behind in the dining area to talk with Riya and Elena. As the men left the room, the conversation between the three women softened, turning into something much more personal and sincere.
Riya leaned in closer to her sister, her eyes sparkling with pure, unadulterated curiosity. “So…” she began leadingly, “are you finally going to tell me what is really going on between the two of you?”
Nyra let out a heavy sigh, trying to downplay the tension. “There is nothing going on.”
Riya raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Don't even try to lie to me, sis. I know you better than that.”
Elena offered a soft, knowing smile as she intervened gently. “It is definitely not nothing, sis.”
Nyra looked toward the older woman, feeling incredibly unsure of herself. “It’s just… everything is incredibly complicated right now,” she admitted quietly.
“All truly meaningful things in life usually are,” Elena replied wisely, her eyes holding a deep sense of understanding. A brief silence settled over them before Elena added, “The real issue is that you simply choose not to see it yet.”
Nyra blinked, caught off guard. “See what?”
Riya smiled gently at her sister's cluelessness. “The undeniable way he looks at you when you aren't paying attention.”
Nyra froze completely, the words striking a chord deep inside her. She couldn't deny it to herself anymore—she had noticed those fleeting looks, but she had never been brave enough to openly admit what they meant.
“Adrian has never looked at anyone else like that,” Elena continued softly, cementing the truth. “Not even at any of us in his own family.”
A profound silence settled over the table as the weight of the realization sank in.
“When he looks at you, sis…” Riya paused for a moment, searching for the right words before speaking softly, “it’s like you are the only person in the room who truly matters to him.”
Nyra quickly looked away, her heart quickening, because deep down, she knew that letting herself believe that sentiment was a very dangerous thing.
Out in the quiet expanse of the garden, Alex stood leaning casually against a stone pillar, enjoying the cool air. Riya walked out a moment later, joining him near the edge of the terrace with her arms firmly crossed over her chest.
_
“You know, you’ve been doing an awful lot of staring today,” Alex noted smoothly, turning his head to look at her.
“I don't stare, I observe,” Riya corrected him sharply without breaking her gaze.
Alex chuckled softly. “It’s essentially the exact same thing.”
“No, it isn't.”
A brief, thoughtful pause fell between them as the wind rustled through the trees.
“You don't trust him at all, do you?” Alex asked, his tone turning surprisingly perceptive as he brought up Adrian.
Riya turned her head to look him dead in the eye. “I don't need to trust him. I trust my sister implicitly.”
Alex nodded respectfully at her fierce loyalty. “Fair enough. That’s more than enough.”
A comfortable silence stretched between them for a moment before Alex spoke up again, a genuine curiosity entering his eyes. “You are a very interesting person, Riya.”
Riya smirked slightly at the compliment, refusing to let him get the upper hand. “And you talk far too much.”
Alex burst into a hearty laugh, completely charmed by her deflection. Even as the laughter faded, his eyes lingered on her face, remaining there just a little bit longer than was strictly necessary.
Back inside the grand villa, Nyra sat in a quiet corner of the room, completely lost in her own thoughts. Her mind was racing as she tried to process every single word she had heard from Elena and her sister this afternoon.
Unbeknownst to her, across the expanse of the crowded room, Adrian stood perfectly still, his eyes locked onto her solitary figure. He watched her silently, noting the subtle shift in her demeanor and the thoughtful expression clouding her face. But this time, he made no move to cross the room or force her hand; he simply stood back in the shadows, waiting patiently for her to take the next step.
