The toxic, suffocating tension that had trailed Nyra from the hollow silence of the house straight into the sterile, high-stakes environment of the office didn't just linger—it actively hunted her.
Now, trapped in the very moment she was desperately trying to block out, she kept her head down and forced her trembling fingers to move across the keyboard, pretending to be utterly consumed by her work. It was a pathetic lie, a fragile mask to hide from the devastating echo of the words he had branded into her mind earlier:
“You’re mine.”
Those two words still burned against her skin like a physical mark, refusing to grant her a single second of peace.
The heavy glass doors of the executive suite swung open with a sharp, echoing click of heels that immediately sliced through the quiet room. It was a confident, predatory rhythm that announced a presence requiring absolutely no introduction,
causing Nyra’s hands to freeze entirely over the keys as Sera walked in.
She moved through the room with an insufferable air of absolute ownership, looking around as if she owned every square inch of the company—and worse, acting as though Adrian himself belonged entirely to her.
Sera’s sharp, calculating eyes swept across the room until they locked onto him, a slow, mocking smile curving her lips as she breathed out his name without a shred of hesitation: “Adrian.”
She didn't wait for an invitation, stepping directly into his personal space and leaning her body slightly into his with an effortless, infuriating familiarity that made Nyra’s grip on the folder in her lap tighten until her knuckles turned stark white.
“Missed me?” Sera asked, her voice dripping with a playful but deeply calculated warmth designed to provoke.
Adrian remained entirely motionless, refusing to draw back but offering no warmth in return as his unreadable, ice-cold gaze fixed on her face. “You shouldn’t be here,” he stated, his voice flat, deadpan, and devoid of any welcome.
Sera let out a soft, melodic laugh that felt entirely hollow, murmuring, “And you’re still exactly the same.” A heavy pause hung in the air before her gaze shifted slowly, deliberately, toward the desk where Nyra sat. Her eyes narrowed into a measured, deeply judgmental stare, sizing up the competition before she drawled, “…and this must be the new assistant?” A faint, mocking smirk played at the corners of her mouth.
The silence in the room became absolute, but Nyra refused to let herself be diminished into background noise. Standing up with slow, deliberate grace, she looked Sera directly in the eyes without lowering her gaze for a single second. “I have a name,” Nyra said, her voice dropping to a sharp, lethal calm.
Sera arched a perfectly manicured brow, her expression morphing into one of amused condescension. “Oh? And what exactly is it?”
Stepping out from behind her desk, Nyra closed the distance between them, refusing to look intimidated or back down an inch as she bared her teeth. “Nyra.”
The name hung heavily between them. Sera’s practiced smile didn't fade, but the warmth completely evaporated from her eyes, leaving behind a cold, hard glare. “Cute,” she dismissed smoothly.
Before the toxic back-and-forth could escalate any further, Adrian’s voice cut through the air like a blade, cold, final, and absolute: “Leave.”
Sera blinked once in surprise, the only crack in her flawless facade, before she forced another laugh and stepped back, not looking defeated but rather like an apex predator willing to wait for the next strike. “You’re still choosing silence over answers,” she whispered softly, her eyes lingering heavily on Nyra before she finally turned on her heel and walked out, the heavy glass door clicking shut behind her.
Yet, the suffocating atmosphere didn't leave with her; it remained trapped in the room, thick, heavy, and burning.
Nyra whipped around to face him, the anger she had been suppressing finally boiling over. “So that’s her. She walks in here like she completely owns you—and you just stand there and let her.” The words were a direct challenge, crossing a dangerous line as her voice tightened with an emotion she desperately wanted to deny.
Adrian took a step forward, his movements slow, deliberate, and radiating a quiet danger that filled the entire space. “And what exactly is bothering you so much about that?” he demanded, his voice dropping an octave.
Nyra let out a short, sharp laugh that sounded incredibly bitter. “Nothing. Why on earth would it bother me?”
It was a blatant, terrible lie, and they both knew it. Adrian crossed the final remaining distance, stopping so close that his towering frame completely overshadowed her. “Say it again.”
“What?” she breathed, her defiance faltering just a fraction.
“Tell me again that it doesn’t bother you.”
Clinging onto the last shreds of her pride, Nyra held his dark gaze firmly. “It doesn’t.”
The silence that followed was suffocating. Without warning, Adrian’s hand shot forward, his fingers wrapping firmly around her wrist and pulling her body flush against his—not with brutal force, but with an inescapable, commanding grip that left no room for escape. “Lie to me again,” he commanded quietly, his dark eyes boring into hers.
Her breath hitched sharply in her throat as she struggled against his hold. “I’m not—”
“You are.”
A desperate, furious pause stretched between them until the raw truth ripped out of Nyra before she could stop it. “She touched you! Why do you let her act like she has a right to you?”
The admission hung violently in the air. Adrian’s eyes darkened into a dangerous shade of midnight, his grip tightening just a fraction as he answered, “No, she didn't.”
Nyra swallowed hard, her chest heaving as the realization hit her—this wasn't just workplace tension anymore. This was raw, unfiltered, agonizing jealousy, and it was tearing her apart from the inside out.
Adrian leaned down, his breath brushing against her skin, his voice a low, gravelly purr. “So it does bother you.”
“That’s not the point,” she whispered frantically, trying to look away from the intensity of his gaze.
“It is the entire point,” he countered fiercely, leaning closer until his lips were inches from hers. “Because if it didn’t consume you, you wouldn’t be looking at me right now like you want to burn down every single thing standing between us.”
The silence exploded around them because his words were the absolute, devastating truth. She hated how much power he had over her, hated how easily he saw through her defenses, but she couldn't stop the words from tearing out of her chest next: “Stay away from her.”
It was a blatant command, an unearned claim, and the exact second the words left her lips, Nyra froze in horror at her own audacity. She had absolutely no right to demand that from him.
Adrian went entirely still, the dangerous tension in his jaw shifting as a slow, wicked smile spread across his face. “Say that to me again.”
Nyra kept her mouth shut, her heart hammering violently against her ribs as she realized the massive trap she had just walked into. But Adrian wasn't done playing with his prey; he stepped even closer, eliminating every remaining millimeter of space until she could feel the heat radiating off his skin. “For someone who fights so hard to tell me she isn’t mine… you certainly act like it.”
Her breath shook violently as she looked up into the eyes of the man who possessed her soul, whispering back with equal venom and passion, “And for a man who constantly claims he doesn’t care about anyone… you act a million times worse.”
That was it. The final, fragile line holding them back had been crossed, snapped, and completely obliterated.
Adrian wrapped his arm firmly around her waist, pulling her so tightly against his chest that she could feel the frantic, heavy thudding of his own heart. His voice dropped to a terrifyingly intimate, possessive whisper that vibrated straight through her core: “Be very careful how you play this, little flame.”
“Why?” she challenged, her voice trembling but her eyes flashing with a fierce, dangerous fire.
Adrian gripped her jaw, forcing her to look at the absolute obsession burning in his eyes. “Because I don’t share what belongs to me.”
A deafening, consuming silence swallowed the room whole. This time, Nyra didn't try to pull away, she didn't argue, and she didn't utter a single word of denial—because deep down, buried beneath the fear and the anger, she already knew the terrifying truth: she didn't want him to share either.
